The Amazon Basics Book Safe is first in Amazon's diversion safe category with 15,914 ratings at 4.3 stars, for £12.49: a book-shaped box with a combination lock and two litres of space.

It takes third because it is honest about what it is — a diversion, not a defence — and because 15,914 ratings make it the second-best-evidenced product here. On a shelf it is invisible; against a determined thief it is not.

## Questions people ask

**Is it a real safe?**

No. It is a diversion safe: its job is to look like a book so nobody picks it up.

**How much fits inside?**

Two litres, which takes a passport, documents or cash rather than jewellery boxes.

**Does it have pages?**

No: the cover and spine are fabric, and the inside is an empty lock box.

**Where should I keep it?**

The listing recommends between two other books on a shelf, which is how it works.

**Why is it third?**

Because it is the cheapest and second-most-reviewed product here, and it does a job the steel boxes cannot.

**How many ratings does it have?**

15914 at the time of collection, averaging 4.3 stars, with 69 per cent five-star and 6 per cent one-star.
