The Amazon Basics lock box is the best seller in Amazon's cabinet safe category: £20.91, 4.4 stars from 9,881 ratings, a 21.8 x 15.5cm steel tray with a combination lock and a 4.2cm depth.

It takes second because it is the most popular product here and the most misnamed: it is a lock box, not a safe, and the 4.2cm depth is why. For documents and cash in a house it does the job.

## Questions people ask

**Is it a safe?**

No, it is a lock box: at 4.2cm deep it cannot be bolted down and is designed to sit in a drawer or cabinet.

**Can it be carried away?**

Yes, and the listing does not claim otherwise. It keeps documents and cash behind a lock, not out of a thief's hands.

**Do I need keys?**

No, it is a mechanical combination lock, which is why buyers mention changing the code easily.

**What fits inside?**

Documents, cash and jewellery: it is 21.8 x 15.5cm and shallow.

**Why is it second?**

Because it is the most popular product here and the most honestly described: a locked tray for a drawer.

**How many ratings does it have?**

9881 at the time of collection, averaging 4.4 stars, with 72 per cent five-star and 5 per cent one-star.
