The Amazon Basics steps cost £21.99 and are rated 4.6 stars from 496 ratings, 83 per cent five-star, standing 35.1cm high with an MDF board inside the foam.

They take sixth because the internal board is the detail that decides whether foam steps survive, and the record is nearly the best here, while 35.1cm limits them to a sofa or a low bed.
