This retractable gate costs £26.39, spans up to 150cm and is rated 4.4 stars from 839 ratings.

It takes ninth because it is the lightest gate here at 1.8kg — mesh on posts rather than a steel frame — and because that also tells you what it cannot do: be charged by a determined dog.

## Questions people ask

**Does it need drilling?**

Yes: retractable gates mount with hardware rather than pressure.

**Is mesh as strong as a metal gate?**

No: it flexes, which suits a doorway rather than a charging dog.

**Why is it so light?**

Because there is no frame, only two posts and a sheet of mesh.

**Can it close a wide opening?**

Yes, up to 150cm, which is the widest span here.

**Why is it ninth?**

Because it is light, wide and cheap, but it needs drilling and it flexes.

**How many ratings does it have?**

839 at the time of collection, averaging 4.4 stars, with 72 per cent five-star and 3 per cent one-star.
