The Seagate 4TB Portable Hard Drive (STGX4000400) is the drive at number four in this guide. It is a bus-powered USB 3.0 portable marketed as an Amazon Exclusive, priced at £143.16, which puts it in the upper middle of the nine drives here - the range across the group runs from £89.91 to £169.94. Its 4.5 rating is drawn from 265,604 ratings, the largest review base in the guide.

What earns it a page of its own is how little of its own spec sheet agrees with itself. The same listing gives an 18-inch hard disk form factor for a drive it also calls portable, weighing 260 g and measuring 11.7 x 8 x 2 cm; 18 inches is roughly 46 cm. It also gives cache memory as 4 TB, which is the entire capacity of the drive, and quotes Read Speed as 120 Megabytes Per Second while the Data Transfer Rate field says 120 Megabits Per Second - the same number in two units eight times apart. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing and the customer reviews attached to it, not from testing we have carried out.
