The maXpeedingrods 3300W Portable Inverter Generator takes the top spot in our best portable generators guide. It is a 4-stroke petrol inverter unit with two 230V outlets, a 12V/8.3A DC receptacle and USB sockets, priced at £489.99 and rated 4.5 out of 5 across 567 Amazon ratings. The listing sells it for camping, RV travel, home backup and jobsites.

Its own listing is where the worthwhile details are. The big 3300W number is the starting figure; running output is 3000W, and both the bullets and the spec table agree on that pair. The spec table then lists "Tank Volume" as 145 cubic centimetres — the identical value it gives for engine displacement, which is the engine size, not a fuel tank. The bullets also claim 8.3 hours at 25% load, 4.5 hours at 50% load and 10-12 hours in ECO mode, while the spec table's runtime field says a flat 8 hours. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing, not from any testing we carried out.

What buyers actually say

Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon

Verified purchase

“So far have only added oil to the generator and done a test run to make sure it functions properly. Turned the engine over a few time with ignition off to circulate the oil before adding fuel. Turned the run dial to choke and the engine started on the third pull. Switched the dial to run and the generator run's smoothly, noise level is acceptable and drops significantly when switching to eco mode. Have subsequently done more test runs and the generator starts on the first pull, it easily powers tools within its rated power output range. Charged my EcoFlow power station, iPhone and iPad without any problems at all. Build quality seems good, early days but very happy with my purchase so far.”
