Price and rating as shown on Amazon when we collected them. Both change.

The Dimplex Clement tops our guide to electric fireplaces: a 2 kW inset fire in matt black with an Optiflame LED log bed, rated 4.5 out of 5 from 725 ratings and listed at £177.65. It is the only fire in the guide sold as either inset or freestanding, because a spacer frame is included that takes the unit flat to the wall.

The numbers in the listing are worth unpacking. 'Heat Output: 2 Kilowatts' sits beside 'Power Consumption: 8 Watts' — the 8 W belongs to the flame-only LED mode the advert calls "pennies an hour". Switch the heater on and the bullets give you 1000 W or 2000 W instead. Coverage is quoted as 20 square metres, the only metric figure in a guide where every other fire lists square feet. And the frame is said to fit a 16" or 18" opening, while the same listing gives a front width of 52.3 cm and a back width of 42.4 cm. Everything on this page is taken from the Amazon listing; we have not tested the fire ourselves.

What buyers actually say

Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon

Verified purchase

“So pleased with this fire. It looks so good, when the fire is off, the logs are soft glowing embers, it's lovely, perfect for our large living room.”

Verified purchase

“Great flame effect but does not seem suitable to inset the fire so stands in front of the opening, which is fine as I measured the space before ordering. Also, there is a sparkle effect to the logs so looks like tgey are glowing even when tge fire is completely off.”

Questions people ask

What heat settings does the Dimplex Clement have?

The listing gives 1000W and 2000W settings, with an adjustable thermostat and a safety shut-off.

Does it need a chimney or flue?

No. The ventilation type is given as vent free, and the advert says it can be recessed into an existing fireplace or fitted flat to the wall using the supplied spacer frame.

How much does the flame effect cost to run?

The advert says the flame-only mode uses low-wattage LED lighting "for just pennies an hour". The spec table gives power consumption as 8 Watts (as listed), against a heat output of 2 Kilowatts.

What size fireplace opening will it fit?

The advert says the one-piece frame is designed to fit a 16 inch or 18 inch opening with a 9 cm inset depth. The same listing gives the front width as 52.3 cm and the width at the back as 42.4 cm, so check your opening against both numbers.

What area does it heat?

The listing states a heating coverage of 20 square meters (as listed) — the only coverage figure in our guide given in metres rather than square feet.

How long is the power cable?

1.8 m, as listed, and the Dimplex Clement is supplied as a corded electric fire.
