Best Dining Table 2026: 10 Ranked
By Felipe Iglesias · Updated
The short answer
The best dining table for most homes is the VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table at £59.99: its 140 x 75 cm top works out to 10,500 cm2, which is 175 cm2 for every pound you spend, and it seats four to six while carrying 100 kg. Nothing else on this page seats as many people for the money, and the top wipes clean after every meal.
Tabletop space per pound is what separates these tables, and the gap is far wider than the price tags suggest. The VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table at £59.99 gives you 10,500 cm2, which is 175 cm2 for every pound you hand over. The KROKWOOD Tomas in solid beech at £119.90 gives 5,625 cm2, only 47 cm2 per pound: you pay £59.91 more and take home just over half the table.
That does not make the beech table a bad buy. Solid wood can be sanded back, it does not chip at the edges like a veneer, and a 150 kg load rating on a 75 x 75 cm square is a different promise from a flat pack. But if your question is how many people you can feed, the arithmetic points at the bigger boards and the folding tables, not at the wood.
What decides the purchase is the number on the tape measure, translated into price. A 110 x 70 cm top is 7,700 cm2 and seats four; a 140 x 75 cm top is 10,500 cm2 and seats four to six; an 80 cm circle is 5,027 cm2 and seats two. Ten tables follow, ordered by how much top you actually get for your money, and the best dining table here sits in the middle of the price range rather than the top of it.
VASAGLE Dining Table Set
The pick for a family of four who want the table and the two benches in one order at £76.99.
Advantages
- 7,700 cm2 of tabletop, enough for four place settings with a dish in the middle
- 3,035 owners rate it 4.7, the largest review base of the ten
- Both benches slide under the top, so it takes no more floor than the table alone
- £76.99 buys the table and two benches, where a table plus four chairs usually costs more
- Numbered parts and the included tools make it a one-person build
Disadvantages
- The benches have no backrests, so long dinners are spent sitting upright
- At 27 kg it is the heaviest item here and wants two people on the stairs
- The matte brown top shows greasy fingerprints, where the £32.99 Harbour Housewares trestle wipes clean with a cloth
This is the best dining table buy for a household of four with no chairs to inherit: £76.99 covers the table and both benches, and the benches slide under the top once the meal is over. With 3,035 owners rating it 4.7, it also has the largest review base of the ten.
The top measures 110 x 70 cm, which is 7,700 cm2, enough for four place settings with a serving dish in the middle. That works out at 100 cm2 for every pound, and the steel frame under the moisture-resistant particleboard is sized for daily use rather than the Christmas visit. Numbered parts and the included tools mean one person can build it.
The trade-off is seating comfort and weight. Benches have no backrest, so a long dinner is spent sitting upright, and at 27 kg this is the heaviest piece here, which makes it a two-person lift up a flight of stairs. If you already own chairs and want the same 7,700 cm2 top for £15 less, the VASAGLE 110 cm Dining Table at £61.99 carries 120 kg and has adjustable feet.
VASAGLE Folding Dining Table
Best for a flat where the table shrinks to 76 cm between meals and opens to 120 cm when guests arrive.
Advantages
- Folds from a 120 cm table to a 76 cm console, which is the difference between having a table and not having one in a studio flat
- 9,360 cm2 open, or 140 cm2 for every pound
- The main top takes 100 kg against 50 kg on the leaf, so the fixed side is usable for anything
- Adjustable feet cope with an uneven floor
- 1,682 owners rate it 4.7
Disadvantages
- The leaf takes half the load of the main top, so nobody perches on the open half
- A drop leaf is a joint that can swell, so it needs drying before it is folded away
- Folded, it still stands 78 cm deep, so it needs that much clear floor against the wall
For a flat where the dining table has to disappear between meals, this is the one to take: fold the leaf down and it becomes a console, open it and you have 120 x 78 cm for four people. It shares the 4.7 score of the set above it, from 1,682 owners.
Open, the top gives 9,360 cm2, which is 140 cm2 for every pound. The load is split, and that matters in daily use: the fixed side carries 100 kg while the drop leaf takes 50 kg, so plates and elbows are fine but a child sitting on the open end is not. Adjustable feet keep it level on a kitchen floor that slopes, and assembly takes about 15 minutes.
A folding table has a joint, and a joint is the part that ages. Water in the leaf seam will swell the board and stop it sitting flat, so wipe it dry before folding it away. If you want a top with nothing to fail, the VASAGLE 110 cm Dining Table at £61.99 is £5 less and carries 120 kg on a fixed frame.
KROKWOOD Solid Wood Table Tomas
For buyers who want solid beech instead of board, with a 150 kg load rating on a 75 x 75 cm top.
Advantages
- Solid beech with an 18 mm top and 45 x 45 mm legs, not a veneer over board
- 150 kg load rating, the highest of the ten
- 2,048 owners rate it 4.7
- Rounded edges, which matter with small children at the table
- 14.1 kg, light enough for one person to pull out and sweep under
Disadvantages
- 5,625 cm2 seats two comfortably and four at a squeeze
- 47 cm2 of tabletop per pound, the least efficient on this page
- An oiled beech top wants re-oiling to stay sealed against spills
For a small room where one piece of real wood is worth more than two pieces of board, this is the pick: beech throughout, an oiled finish, and rounded edges that are kinder to a toddler's head. 2,048 owners rate it 4.7, second only to the set at the top of the page.
The top is 75 x 75 cm, or 5,625 cm2, and it carries 150 kg, the highest load rating of the ten. An 18 mm beech top over 45 x 45 mm legs means the frame does the work rather than a veneered panel, and the legs stand 73 cm tall so a deeper chair still clears the apron. At 14.1 kg, one person can shift it for cleaning.
The price is the sticking point. At £119.90 for 5,625 cm2 this works out at 47 cm2 per pound, the least tabletop per pound here, and a 75 cm square seats four only when nobody brings a serving dish. If you want the same footprint in oak, the Julian Bowen Coxmoor at £118.99 is 91p cheaper and rated for 100 kg rather than 150 kg.
VASAGLE 110 cm Dining Table
The straightforward 4-seater if you already own chairs and want 120 kg of support for £61.99.
Advantages
- 120 kg load rating on a table costing £61.99
- 13.6 kg, the lightest of the ten, so it moves for cleaning
- 124 cm2 of tabletop per pound
- 1,172 owners rate it 4.5
- Adjustable feet keep it steady on an uneven floor
Disadvantages
- 110 cm is a hard limit: four people and no more
- No chairs or benches in the box, so add the seating to the price
- Nothing extends, so a sixth guest at Christmas is in the armchair
For anyone who already owns chairs, this is the simplest buy on the page: a 110 x 70 cm top, a steel frame, and 1,172 owners rating it 4.5. Nothing folds and nothing extends, and for a four-person household that is the point.
You get 7,700 cm2, which is 124 cm2 for every pound, and the frames carries 120 kg. That is 20 kg more than the £118.99 Julian Bowen oak square of the same seating capacity, for £57 less. At 13.6 kg it is the lightest table here, so one person can slide it out to sweep underneath, and the adjustable feet deal with a floor that is not quite flat.
What you do not get is seating or length: 110 cm is four people and no more, so a fifth guest is standing, and there are no chairs in the box. The VASAGLE Dining Table Set at £76.99 solves the seating with two benches for £15 more, though it weighs twice as much to move.
VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table
The value buy for a room that must seat six: 140 cm of wipe-clean tabletop for £59.99.
Advantages
- 175 cm2 of tabletop per pound, the best of the fixed tables here
- 10,500 cm2 seats four to six with room for serving dishes
- Heat-resistant, scratch-resistant top that wipes clean
- 100 kg load rating with adjustable feet
- £2 less than the 110 cm VASAGLE table, which gives up 2,800 cm2 of top
Disadvantages
- Only 96 buyers have rated it so far, and the 4.1 score is the lowest of the wooden tables here
- A 140 cm table dominates a small room and needs that much clear wall
- The 1.5 cm veneered top is the thinnest board here, a finished panel rather than a slab
If the room allows 140 cm and the household can be six, this is where the money goes furthest: 10,500 cm2 for £59.99, which is 175 cm2 for every pound. That is nearly four times what the £119.90 KROKWOOD beech table returns on the same measure, and it is the reason this table leads the ranking despite a modest review count.
The 140 x 75 cm top is veneered particleboard with a heat-resistant, scratch-resistant finish, and it wipes clean in seconds, which matters when six people eat off it every day. The splayed steel legs carry 100 kg in total and the adjustable feet keep it level where the floor slopes. Assembly is a screwdriver job with the frame corners already simplified.
Harbour Housewares Folding Trestle Table 180cm
For parties and Christmas dinner when eight people need somewhere to sit and the table folds to 90 cm afterwards.
Advantages
- 13,320 cm2 for £32.99, the most tabletop for the money here
- 404 cm2 per pound, more than double anything else on this page
- Folds to 90 x 74 x 8.5 cm with a built-in carry handle
- 110 kg load rating on locking legs
- 1,799 owners rate it 4.5
Disadvantages
- 73.5 cm high, 1.5 cm lower than the rest of the tables here
- The fold leaves a seam across the middle of the 180 cm top
- It is a trestle first: fine for a party, out of place in a dining room
For the two or three times a year when eight people need somewhere to sit, nothing here comes close on value: 13,320 cm2, the largest top of the ten, for £32.99. It folds to 90 x 74 x 8.5 cm with a carrying handle, so it lives in a cupboard or a garage between uses, and 1,799 owners rate it 4.5.
That is 404 cm2 for every pound, more than double the next best on this page. The stain-resistant white top can be used without a tablecloth, the locking legs hold it steady, and the load rating is 110 kg, which covers a buffet, a stack of plates and a few elbows leaning on the edge.
It is still a temporary table, and it feels like one. At 73.5 cm it is 1.5 cm lower than every other table here, so tall diners sit with their knees high, and the fold runs across the middle of the 180 cm top, leaving a seam under the plates. If you want a table that stays out permanently, the VASAGLE Dining Table Set at £76.99 is £44 more and looks like furniture.
Jocoevol Round Dining Table
For two to four people who want a shelf under the top and no sharp corners on a 107 cm round table.
Advantages
- 8,990 cm2 on a 107 cm circle with no corners to reach past
- A storage shelf under the top keeps the table surface clear
- 25 mm MDF top, heat and scratch resistant
- 1,160 owners rate it 4.4
- The cross base gives more legroom than four straight legs
Disadvantages
- A 107 cm circle needs 107 cm of clear floor in all directions and will not tuck into a corner
- 78 cm2 of tabletop per pound, less than half the £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak
- The title sizes it at 2 to 4 people, so a sixth guest is out
Round tables are for conversation, and this is the cheapest way here to get a 107 cm circle: everyone can see everyone and nobody sits at a corner. The cross-shaped carbon steel base leaves legroom where four posts would put a leg in the way, and 1,160 owners rate it 4.4.
The top gives 8,990 cm2, which is 78 cm2 for every pound, and the 25 mm MDF surface is heat and scratch resistant, so a hot dish goes straight down without a mat. Underneath, the shelf keeps the condiments and the bread basket off the top, and on a circle that matters more than it does on a rectangle, because a round table has no spare corner to park anything.
The cost of the circle is floor space and money. A 107 cm round top needs 107 cm of clear space in every direction and cannot be pushed into a corner the way a rectangle can, and at 78 cm2 per pound it returns less than the £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table, which is £55.97 cheaper. If you want a round table that seats six, the 120 cm Tribesigns below is £43.03 more.
Tribesigns Round Dining Table
For a dining room that can take a 120 cm round table and wants the 4.6 rating from 481 owners.
Advantages
- 120 cm circle and 11,310 cm2, the largest round top here
- 30 mm MDF top, the thickest board of the ten
- Non-slip feet cope with an uneven floor
- 481 owners rate it 4.6
- 26.3 kg of top and frame means it stays exactly where it is put
Disadvantages
- £158.99 buys 71 cm2 of tabletop per pound, near the bottom of the ten
- A 120 cm circle needs a clear metre in every direction
- At 26.3 kg it takes two people to turn or move it
This is the biggest circle of the ten: 120 cm across, which gives four people room to spread out and gives the table real presence in a dining room. 481 owners rate it 4.6, the joint highest score among the round tables here.
The top is 11,310 cm2 of 30 mm MDF, the thickest board on this page, on a metal frame that brings the whole table to 26.3 kg. That weight is why it does not walk across the floor when someone leans on it, and the non-slip feet level it out on a floor that is not quite true.
Price and footprint are what hold it back. At £158.99 it returns 71 cm2 for every pound, near the bottom of the ten, and a 120 cm circle wants 120 cm of clear space on every side. The £115.96 Jocoevol gives 8,990 cm2 for £43.03 less, and the £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak seats as many people on a rectangular top for £99 less.
Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table
For solid oak in a small footprint, and for anyone who wants the oiled finish rather than a veneer.
Advantages
- Solid oak with an oiled finish on a 75 x 75 cm square
- 16.7 kg on a half-metre square, so it does not slide around
- 100 kg load rating
- 622 owners rate it 4.5
- All fixtures and fittings included, so assembly needs only a screwdriver
Disadvantages
- 5,625 cm2 seats four with no room left for a serving dish
- 47 cm2 of tabletop per pound, the second-lowest of the ten
- Oiled oak wants re-oiling to stay sealed against spills
For the corner of a kitchen or a small dining room, this is the solid-wood option: just over half a square metre of floor, oak throughout, and an oiled finish that shows the grain instead of covering it. 622 owners rate it 4.5.
The top is 75 x 75 cm, or 5,625 cm2, and it carries 100 kg. At 16.7 kg it is 2.6 kg heavier than the beech KROKWOOD square on the same footprint, which is a dense top that does not slide or bounce when someone writes at it. Every fixture and fitting comes in the box, so assembly is a screwdriver and ten minutes.
Two limits to accept: 5,625 cm2 seats four only while nobody brings a serving dish, and £118.99 works out at 47 cm2 per pound, the second-lowest here. The KROKWOOD Tomas at £119.90 is 91p more on the same footprint and carries 150 kg against this table's 100 kg.
VASAGLE Round Dining Table 80 cm
For a couple in a small flat: an 80 cm round top, 100 kg of support and no corners, all for £57.99.
Advantages
- 80 cm circle with a 2.5 cm top, thicker board than the £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak
- 100 kg load rating at £57.99
- 14.5 kg, light enough to move alone
- 366 owners rate it 4.6
- Adjustable feet for an uneven floor
Disadvantages
- 5,027 cm2 is the smallest top here: two people, four at a push
- 87 cm2 per pound, less than half the £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak
- A round top needs its own clear space and will not tuck into a corner
This is the smallest table here and one of the cheapest, and for a couple in a flat it is the right size: 80 cm across, 14.5 kg, and a golden oak top that wipes clean after breakfast. 366 owners rate it 4.6.
The circle gives 5,027 cm2, which is 87 cm2 for every pound, and the C-shaped steel legs hold 100 kg, the same figure as tables costing twice as much. The 2.5 cm top is also thicker than the 1.5 cm board on the £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak, so it feels more solid than its price suggests, and the adjustable feet stop it rocking on an old floor.
The 80 cm diameter is the catch. Two people eat comfortably, four only if the plates are small, and 5,027 cm2 is the least tabletop of the ten. For £4 more, the VASAGLE 110 cm Dining Table seats four and gives 7,700 cm2, which is 2,673 cm2 more for the price of a coffee.

How much tabletop do you get for your money?
Between 47 and 404 cm2 for every pound, and the difference has nothing to do with quality. At £59.99 the VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table gives 10,500 cm2, which is 175 cm2 per pound. At £119.90 the KROKWOOD Tomas gives 5,625 cm2, or 47 cm2 per pound: you pay £59.91 more and take home just over half the table.
The best dining table is not the one with the nicest finish, it is the one that gives your household enough top per pound. Small tables are priced as furniture and large ones as flat packs. A 75 x 75 cm square is bought by someone furnishing a corner, a 140 x 75 cm top by someone feeding a family, and the second buyer gets far more board for the money.
So work out the seats first, then divide. A 140 x 75 cm top is about 10,500 cm2 and takes four to six; a 110 x 70 cm top is 7,700 cm2 and takes four; a 75 x 75 cm square is 5,625 cm2 and takes four at a squeeze. Divide by the price and you can see instantly what the table is costing you.
What size dining table seats six?
A 140 to 160 cm long top, or a 120 cm circle at a push. Six place settings need roughly 360 cm of usable edge, which a 140 x 75 cm rectangle provides when two sit on each long side and one at each end.
Do not count the whole top. Leave 15 cm at each end for serving dishes, which is why 160 cm is the more comfortable six-seater and why a 140 cm top is sold as four to six rather than six. A 120 cm round table gives six people about 45 cm each, which is tight on Christmas Day and perfectly fine on a Tuesday.
If six is a permanent number rather than an annual event, buy the length. If it is twice a year, a folding 180 cm trestle at £32.99 seats eight and stores in a cupboard.
Is solid oak worth it over board?
Only if you are buying a small table and keeping it for fifteen years. Solid wood is denser, can be sanded back and does not chip at the edges the way a melamine veneer does, and a 5,625 cm2 oak square rated at 100 kg is a different object from a flat pack.
What it does not give you is surface. The £118.99 Julian Bowen Coxmoor returns 47 cm2 per pound against 175 cm2 for the £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak, so you pay more than double for roughly half the table. If two adults eat at it twice a day and it lives against a wall, board with a wipe-clean finish is the practical answer.
The middle ground is a solid beech or oak table in a small size, where the quality shows and the missing square centimetres do not hurt. The mistake is buying solid wood for six people: that combination is where the money disappears.
Should I buy a folding or an extendable table?
A folding table if the room has to do something else, an extending one if the room is big enough to keep the table out. The £66.99 VASAGLE drop leaf runs from a 76 cm console to a 120 cm four-seater, which in a studio flat is the difference between having a dining table and not having one.
Folding costs you load. The drop leaf takes 50 kg against 100 kg on the fixed half, and every leaf and hinge is a part that can swell or work loose if it is left damp. An extending table adds length only, so the top stays one piece and the leaf stores underneath.
A fixed table has nothing to fail. The £61.99 VASAGLE 110 cm is the simplest thing on this page: no joint, no leaf, 120 kg of frame and a top you can put a hot dish on.
How much weight does a dining table need to take?
More than you think, and the range across the ten is 100 kg to 150 kg, so it is worth checking before you buy. A table holding a roast, four plates and a few elbows sees 30 to 40 kg, but someone leaning on one edge puts their whole body weight through a single corner.
The solid beech KROKWOOD Tomas is rated for 150 kg, the highest here, and the £61.99 VASAGLE 110 cm carries 120 kg on a steel frame. Three tables here carry 100 kg, which is still five times a laden Sunday roast.
The load figure is about the frame, not the top. A thick veneered panel on a bolted steel frame will take more abuse than a thinner slab on wooden dowels, which is why board tables can be rated higher than they look.
What does not matter when buying a dining table?
The colour name and the styling copy, mostly. Four tables here are sold as farmhouse, industrial or Scandi, and in every case the working material is a veneered board with a different grain print and a different leg shape. The joints and the load rating are what you will notice in year three.
What does matter is on the tape measure. A 110 x 70 cm top is 7,700 cm2 and seats four; a 140 x 75 cm top is 10,500 cm2 and seats four to six; a 75 x 75 cm square is 5,625 cm2 and seats four when the plates are small. No finish changes those numbers, and no product photo admits them.
Ignore the phrase space-saving unless a number follows it. A 180 cm trestle at £32.99 genuinely saves space because it folds to 90 cm. A 140 cm fixed table does not, however warm the oak looks in the photo.
How do I clean and keep a dining table?
Wipe it after every meal and keep any joint dry. Heat and standing water kill a tabletop far more often than knife marks. A veneered or melamine board is sealed and takes a damp cloth, while an oiled solid top needs re-oiling once a year so water does not get into the grain.
On a folding table, dry the leaf seam before you fold it away. A swollen hinge will not sit flat again, and that is the one repair nobody wants to pay for on a £66.99 table.
Use mats under hot dishes, even on a heat-resistant surface, and lift rather than drag a 27 kg table across a wooden floor.
Final Verdict
The best dining table for most homes is the VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table. At 140 x 75 cm it gives 10,500 cm2, seats four to six and returns 175 cm2 for every pound, with a wipe-clean, heat-resistant top and a 100 kg frame for £59.99. It will not suit a room with less than about 1.5 m of clear wall, and it arrives with nothing to sit on.
If you need seating in the same order, take the VASAGLE Dining Table Set at £76.99: the same 7,700 cm2 top with two benches that slide underneath, for £15 more than a table alone. If the room cannot spare 140 cm, the 110 cm VASAGLE at £61.99 keeps four people at the table for £2 more than the winner.
Questions people ask
What is the best dining table?
For most homes it is the VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table at £59.99: a 140 x 75 cm top, 10,500 cm2, seats four to six, carries 100 kg, and works out at 175 cm2 of tabletop for every pound spent. If you also need somewhere for people to sit, the VASAGLE Dining Table Set at £76.99 adds two benches for £15 more.
How much should I spend on a dining table?
£33 buys a folding trestle that seats eight at a party, £58 to £77 buys a solid table for two to four people, and £115 to £160 buys a round table with a thicker board. Above £150 you pay for thickness and weight rather than more surface: the area per pound falls as the price climbs, from 175 cm2 per pound at £59.99 to 71 cm2 at £158.99.
What size dining table seats four?
A 110 x 70 cm rectangle, which is about 7,700 cm2, or a 107 cm round table at roughly 8,990 cm2. Both seat four with a serving dish in the middle. An 80 cm circle takes two comfortably and four only if you keep the plates small.
Is MDF good enough for a dining table?
Yes, and it is what most tables under £160 use. MDF with a veneered or melamine finish is heat resistant, scratch resistant and wipes clean, and on a steel frame it will carry 100 kg. Solid oak or beech is the upgrade if you want to sand the surface back in ten years.
Can a dining table be kept outside?
Only if it is built for it. A plastic-topped folding trestle can go out for a barbecue and come back in afterwards, which is what its 110 kg load rating and wipe-clean surface are for. Particleboard and MDF tops, which is what most of these tables are, swell once water reaches an edge, so they belong indoors.
How do I stop a dining table wobbling?
Buy one with adjustable feet. Most tables here have levelling feet, and a splayed or C-shaped steel leg will sit steady on a floor that slopes by a few millimetres. A solid wood square with fixed legs is the one that most often rocks, and a felt pad under the short leg is the usual fix.
How many chairs fit under a 140 cm table?
Four comfortably, six with two on each long side and one at each end, which is why a 140 cm top is sold as a four to six seater. A standard chair needs about 45 cm of width, so six chairs need roughly 360 cm of usable edge, and the ends count only if nothing is sitting there under the top.
Does a round table save space?
Not in floor area. A 107 cm circle needs 107 cm of clearance in every direction and cannot be pushed into a corner the way a rectangle can. What it saves is the argument over who sits at the head of the table, because a circle has no head.
Why trust this ranking?
We rank on price, customer ratings and the specifications that decide the job, and we read each specification table against the marketing bullets on the same listing. When a number does not survive that check, we say so in the entry rather than quietly dropping the product. We also say when a product is the wrong one for you.
