Best Toilet Seats: 9 Ranked, and Why the Load Figures Don't Add Up

Any list of the best toilet seats has to start with the one most people actually buy, and that is this one: 10,537 ratings at 4.4 stars, and first place in Amazon's Toilet Seats category. At £17.99 it is the second cheapest seat here, and it still outsells everything else on the page.

In practice, the seat measures 43.2 x 36.5cm and weighs 1.48kg, so it is a light oval lid rather than a heavy one. The soft close runs on ABS cylinders, and the one-touch quick release lets you lift the whole seat off the hinges for cleaning. Fixings are included, and the hinges are adjustable at the time of fitting.

The catch is in the material fields. The bullets describe an O-shaped thermoset lid, while the Material entry lists Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) — two different plastics in one advert. There is also no hole spacing published anywhere, so if your pan has unusual mounting holes, measure before ordering. Six per cent of its ratings are one-star.

Second place goes to the only genuinely warm-to-touch seat here. MDF at 3.8kg holds heat where plastic stays cold, and 4.3 stars from 3,706 ratings puts it just behind the leader on score. At £22.99 it sits in the middle of the price range, and Amazon lists it sixth in Toilet Seats.

The outer ring measures 43.2 x 37.5 x 1.9cm, so it is 1cm wider than the SA Products seat above it. The lid carries a grooved pattern, and the soft close mechanism lowers both seat and lid. Fixings come in the box and the manufacturer says no extra tools are needed.

That said, one field disagrees with the description. Operation Mode is listed as Manual while the name and the bullets both promise a soft close mechanism. MDF is also the wrong material for a permanently wet bathroom, and at 3.8kg this is nearly twice the weight of the cheapest seat here. If you want the best toilet seat for a cold bathroom and you can keep it dry, it earns its place.

This is the first of two DERW seats, and the highest rated of the pair by volume: 4.5 stars from 977 ratings at £26.99. It is seventh in Amazon's Toilet Seats category, lower than its score suggests, and crucially it is the only seat among the best toilet seats here that ships with an alignment guide — a paper template that removes most of the guesswork from fitting.

The d-shaped toilet seat measures 460 x 365 x 50mm and is designed for pans with a 445–480mm length from the mounting hole to the rim. The dual-button quick release drops the seat off for cleaning, and the golden corner bumps are there to stop it shifting. Weight capacity is printed at 150kg.

However, the material is described two ways: the bullets say high-quality PP, the spec table says Premium Thermoplastic. Those are the same family of plastic, though not the same wording, and PP is the cheapest material in this ranking while carrying the joint-highest score. Either way, if your pan is shorter than 445mm or longer than 480mm, this seat will not line up.

GRIFEMA's G951 is the cheaper of the two urea-formaldehyde seats here at £27.89, and it carries 3,253 ratings at 4.2 stars. Its best sellers rank tells a different story from the score: 222nd in Toilet Seats, far below seats with fewer reviews behind them. A five-year manufacturer warranty is the longest stated in this ranking.

The material is urea-formaldehyde, which the maker claims is more scratch resistant than PP and less prone to fading and deforming. There is a quick release button on the hinge, four non-slip buffers to stop the seat shifting, and an adjustable hinge to line up with your fixing holes. Weight is 1.65kg.

Worth noting, the dimensions contradict each other. The highlight field says it fits toilets 38.2–44.2cm long. The Item Dimensions field says 17.5L x 3.6W centimetres, which is roughly the size of a hinge, not a seat. In theory one of the two is a typo. Measure your own pan either way, and skip this one if you want published hole spacing, because none is given.

WOLTU's duroplast seat sits in the middle of the load-claim ladder: 175kg, more than either DERW, less than the SURFOU. At £29.99 it comes with 2,865 ratings at 4.2 stars and stainless steel hinges that the maker says will not rust.

This oval toilet seat gives more fit information than anything else here: outer edge 37 x 47.5cm, inner edge 23.1 x 29cm, hole spacing 13–17cm. That is enough to measure your own pan against before ordering. The soft close mechanism is built into the hinge, and pressing the quick release button lifts the seat off for cleaning.

At the same time, 47.5cm is the longest outer measurement in the top half of this list, so a compact pan will leave it overhanging. It is 66th in Toilet Seats, and 7% of its ratings are one-star. If your bowl is standard and you want the numbers upfront, this is the one to check.

This is the O-shaped half of the DERW pair, and it scores the same 4.5 stars as the D-shaped one but from 480 ratings rather than 977. It is 21st in Toilet Seats, which is the strongest category position of any seat in the top half of this list, and it costs £33.99.

The body is urea-formaldehyde resin, which the maker says resists ageing and discolouration, and the load claim is 150kg — identical to the D-shaped DERW, despite a different shape and a higher price. Dimensions are 450 x 375 x 60mm, for pans measuring 425–465mm from mounting hole to rim. A single-button quick release unclips the seat, and buffer pads cut noise.

Even so, £33.99 buys you the same 150kg claim and the same 4.5-star rating as the £26.99 D-shaped model from the same brand, plus 10mm more height. The 60mm profile is the thickest seat here. If your pan is an O-shape and you want the quieter close, it is fine; if you want the best soft close toilet seat for the money from this brand, the D-shaped one is cheaper.

At £46.74 the Sanilo is the most expensive seat in this ranking, roughly three times the cheapest. It justifies part of that with a wood body and a printed finish, and it carries 2,972 ratings at 4.2 stars — a large review base for the price bracket. It ranks 103rd in Toilet Seats.

The seat is made from break-resistant wood and mounted on six spacers, which the maker says improves comfort. It installs from above with a screwdriver, so you do not need to reach behind the pan, and the lid detaches at the press of a button for cleaning. Dimensions are 48 x 37.7cm and it weighs 3kg.

By contrast with the rest of this page, Sanilo publishes no hole spacing and no pan length range. The claim that it fits all common wall-mounted and free-standing bowls is not backed by a single measurement in the listing. At 48cm it is also the longest seat here. If your pan is anything other than standard, that is a real risk at this price.

This is the cheapest seat on the page at £15.99, and it still manages 9th place in Amazon's Toilet Seats category with 632 ratings at 4.2 stars. For the best toilet seat for the money in the strictest sense, this is the one — though the savings come with gaps in the spec.

It is built from what Harbour Housewares calls Duraplast and measures 44 x 36.5cm, close to the SA Products seat at the top of this list. You get a toilet seat with soft close operation, a quick release button that removes the seat in seconds, and all fittings included. A 2-year warranty is stated.

That said, two things are missing. No weight capacity is published anywhere, and neither is hole spacing — the spec table simply says Plastic. The material name Duraplast is a brand term, not a listed material. Meanwhile 8% of ratings are one-star, the second highest share of low scores in this ranking.
