Is the Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table worth buying?

The Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table is worth buying at £118.99 if you want real oak in a corner and only ever seat four people. It is a 75 x 75 cm square of solid oak with an oiled finish, 16.7 kg of wood that carries 100 kg, and 622 owners rate it 4.5. You are paying for the material and the small footprint, not for surface area.

Skip it if six people turn up for dinner, because nothing here extends and 75 cm a side is four place settings with nowhere left to stand the serving dishes. Skip it too if you measure tables by the square centimetre: the same £118.99 spent on the VASAGLE Golden Oak buys 10,500 cm2 rather than 5,625 cm2.

What does a 100 kg load rating mean on a 75 cm oak table?

The number to hold on to is 100 kg, the load the frame is built to carry, spread across 5,625 cm2 of top, which is 75 cm multiplied by 75 cm. That works out at 1.78 kg of load for every 100 cm2 of oak, enough for a roast, four plates, a jug and a few elbows leaning on the edge. Solid oak over four legs does not flex the way a thin veneered panel does, so the table stays still when someone pushes back from it.

Cost per square centimetre is where the oak gives ground. £118.99 divided by 5,625 cm2 works out at 47 cm2 of tabletop for every pound, one of the lowest returns of the ten tables compared for this category. The £59.99 VASAGLE Golden Oak returns 175 cm2 for the same pound, and that gap is the price of wood instead of veneer.

What comes in the box and what is it like to live with?

One table arrives, and that is the whole delivery: 1 x table with its fixtures and fittings, so chairs are a separate purchase. Assembly is required and a screwdriver is the only tool recommended, which on four legs and a 16.7 kg oak top is half an hour for one person and fifteen minutes for two. The recommended use for it is displaying as much as dining, which suits a table this size: a lamp, a bowl and a plant look right on it, and so does a Sunday lunch for four.

In place it stands 75 cm high, 75 cm wide and 75 cm deep, roughly the footprint of a single bed, and an indoor table only. At 16.7 kg one adult can drag it clear to sweep behind it, and the oak takes a hot dish without a ring, though the oiled surface still wants a mat under anything straight off the hob. No leaf, no folding mechanism, no height adjustment: what you build is what you keep.

Where does the Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table fall short?

The top is small and it does not grow. Four people fit, but with 75 cm a side there is no spare corner for the serving dish, the water jug and the bread basket at the same time, and a fifth guest has nowhere to sit. On a square table everyone also sits at a leg, so chairs have to be tucked in rather than pushed round the corner.

The oiled finish asks for attention where a melamine top asks for nothing. A spill left overnight can mark bare oak, and the surface wants re-oiling roughly once a year to stay sealed against water, which is a half-hour job with a cloth and a tin rather than a problem. It weighs 16.7 kg, so moving it between rooms is a two-trip decision rather than a whim.

It is also the more expensive way to seat four people. £118.99 buys 5,625 cm2 here, while the VASAGLE Golden Oak at £59.99 buys 10,500 cm2 and seats up to six. On load, the 100 kg rating is 50 kg below what the solid beech KROKWOOD Tomas carries at £119.90, so you are choosing grain over capacity.

How does the Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table compare with the alternatives?

Against the KROKWOOD Solid Wood Table Tomas at £119.90, the decision is beech or oak for a difference of 91p. The Tomas carries 150 kg against this table's 100 kg, weighs 14.1 kg against 16.7 kg, and its 18 mm top over 45 x 45 mm legs is the heavier frame. Take the Coxmoor for the darker oak grain and the oiled finish, and the Tomas if you want the extra 50 kg of load for the same money.

Against the VASAGLE Golden Oak Kitchen Table at £59.99, the Coxmoor asks £59 more and gives 4,875 cm2 less. The VASAGLE offers 10,500 cm2 and seats four to six; the Coxmoor offers 5,625 cm2 and seats four. If the room can take a 140 cm top and you feed a family, the cheaper table is the right one, and if the table has to sit against a kitchen wall for fifteen years, £118.99 in solid oak is money well spent.

Questions people ask

Does the Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table need assembling?

Yes, it arrives as one flat-packed table that requires assembly, and a screwdriver is the only tool recommended. All the fixtures and fittings come in the box, so nothing else has to be bought.

How many people can sit at the Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table?

Four at mealtimes. The top measures 75 x 75 cm, which is 5,625 cm2, so four place settings fit with a dish in the middle and very little room to spare.

What is the maximum weight the Coxmoor Oak Table will hold?

100 kg, which covers a roast, four plates and elbows on the edge. That is 50 kg less than the solid beech KROKWOOD Tomas at £119.90, so the oak trades some capacity for its finish.

Is the Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table solid oak or veneered?

Solid oak throughout, finished with oil rather than lacquer. That means the surface can be sanded back and re-oiled, which a melamine or veneered top cannot.

Can the Julian Bowen Coxmoor Oak Table be extended or folded away?

No. It does not fold, it cannot be resized and there is no extension leaf, so the 75 x 75 cm top is the table you get.

How heavy is the Coxmoor Oak Table to move?

16.7 kg, light enough for one adult to drag out for cleaning, and 2.6 kg heavier than the 14.1 kg KROKWOOD beech table on the same 75 x 75 cm footprint.
