Rank #2 in Best SDS Drill 2026: 10 Ranked, and Why the Amps Don't Add Up
Makita HR2630 26mm SDS Plus Rotary Hammer Drill, Blue
Price and rating as shown on Amazon when we collected them. Both change.
The Makita HR2630 is the second drill in our SDS guide: a corded three-mode SDS Plus rotary hammer with a 26 mm chuck, finished in Makita blue, listed at £160.99 with 4.8 stars from 1,561 ratings. It also carries the contradiction the guide opens with — the Amazon listing states 18 Amps at 240 Volts and, a couple of lines further down, a maximum power of 450 Watts. Eighteen amps at 240 volts works out at 4,320 watts; 450 watts at 240 volts works out at under 2 amps. Both figures sit on the same listing and nothing there explains the gap.
What is internally consistent: 1,200 RPM, 110 Newton metres of maximum torque, 32 mm drilling capacity in wood and 13 mm in metal, and three operating modes. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon product listing and the customer reviews attached to it, not from any test of our own.
How those 1,561 ratings break down
An average hides its own shape. This is the spread behind the 4.8 stars.

What buyers actually say
Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon
Verified purchase“Bought this after making do with a battery powered hammer drill whilst building my extension. The bricks are super hard and the battery drill whilst a great tool just wasn't cutting it. This SDS drill blasts through bricks like a hot axe through butter! The cable is a pain, but to get this level of power from a battery I think you'd be spending 3 times as much!”
Verified purchase“Had a makita for years but after a hard life i decided to retire the old one. This newer model does the business - When drill or breaking concrete or bricks it is first class and in the price range i do not think it can be matched”
