The Cowmew elliptical cross trainer is ninth in our guide to cross trainers. It is a magnetic-resistance machine with a pulse sensor, 16 levels of adjustable resistance as advertised, and a price of £159.99 — £5 under the £164.99 machine compared elsewhere in this guide. The listing carries 4.6 out of 5 from 17 customer ratings and puts itself 13th in Amazon's Cross Trainers category.

The finding on this one is arithmetic. The title, the first bullet and the spec table all say 16 resistance levels. The bullet that explains them splits the range into 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 and 14-16, which names 15 — level 13 is never assigned to anything. The listing also promises the machine "optimizes the stride distance during workout" without ever printing a stride figure, so the number that matters most on an elliptical is the one this advert withholds. Everything on this page is taken from the Amazon listing, not from a machine we have tested.

What buyers actually say

Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon

Verified purchase

“Easy to assemble but do it in it's final resting place as it's a bit awkward to move after assembled.Very good value for money. It does the job !!”

Steven Ullah
Verified purchase

“Had this for a few months now and I can say that it's very good, you set the level you want to train at and get on with it. We'll made and reasonably easy to put together. One criticism would be the computer, it eats batteries, I've stopped using it and now use the timer on my phone, which is not ideal but cuts down on the battery replacement costs.”
