The TZS First Austria 40L Electric Cool Box with Wheels sits at number five in this guide at £99.95, with a 4.3 rating from 233 Amazon ratings. It is a thermoelectric box rather than a compressor fridge: the listing says it cools to 18°C below the ambient temperature and warms up to 50°C, and it comes with both a 12V car lead and a 230V mains lead. It also has wheels, a telescopic handle, cable storage in the lid and an internal divider.

This product is the clearest example of the problem this guide is about. The name calls it a 40L box, while the capacity bullet and the specification field both say 45 litres — a five-litre gap on a box that is listed as holding 65 cans or 15 wine bottles. The listing never says which figure is usable space and which is the outside of the box, or whether one of them is simply wrong. Two smaller details are worth reading twice: the specification lists a moulded 2-pin BS 4573 shaver plug rather than the usual three-pin plug, and the 18°C cooling figure is a drop below whatever the room is, so on a 30°C day the box is working towards around 12°C rather than fridge temperature. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing itself; we have not tested this cool box.

What buyers actually say

“Excellent quality fridge, arrived really well packaged. We took it on our camping trip during the Aug 26 heatwave. The fridge performed magnificently, it kept milk, cheese, beers and butter very well refrigerated, despite it being +40c in the tent at the height of the afternoon sun. The instructions said it can reduce the ambient temperature by 18c, so by rights, the food and beers should have been cooking in there (at about 22c!). However, this beauty kept everything about 8c somehow. We were very impressed. Been camping for years and this was the first year we took a fan instead of a heater! Getting a chilled beer out of the fridge when it was needed the most, deserves a Nobel prize IMO. Also, my wife probably would have divorced me if I pulled luke-warm cheese or of it. Joking aside, this fridge surpassed our expectations, is light to carry, even has wheels too. Wish we bought this years ago.”

“Very good service. Cool box is brilliant. Holds plenty of cans & bottles. Takes a while to cool down but after a few hours drinks are as cold as when in a full size fridge.Great value for money & is easy to move around with the wheels”
