Price and rating as shown on Amazon when we collected them. Both change.

The TZS First Austria is the model that takes the top spot in this guide: £69.95, 4.6 out of 5 from 1,668 Amazon ratings, a thermoelectric box that runs from a 12V car socket or a 220-240V mains plug. Its capacity figures are the cleanest case in the category — the bullet reads '32-litre gross capacity (25L net)', and the model name uses the smaller of the two numbers, so the 25L on the box is presented as usable space rather than exterior volume.

The spec table is less tidy than the bullet. It describes a 'Compact Freezerless' case with two glass shelves and a moulded 2-pin BS 4573 shaver plug, none of which matches a portable thermoelectric cool box wired for a car socket in the bullets. Cooling is quoted at up to 18°C below ambient, warming up to +50°C, with noise of 49 dB or less. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing; we have not tested the box ourselves.

What buyers actually say

Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon

“My first order of this item never arrived but after finding a way to contact the seller through Amazon chat the matter was rapidly resolved and less than 48 hours the toolbox arrived. Very impressed. So far only test it but after an hour the cold temperature on eco had dropped from 23 to 12 oC.”

“I'm really happy with the cold box. I have a couple of observations. First, it can be really heavy when full. The box itself is quite heavy on its own. Something to remember if you need to carry it any distance. Second, I hadn't thought about the possibility of condensation building up inside the box. Don't put cardboard boxes in the bottom or paper bags. Run the cold box on "eco" wherever possible.I haven't tried the heating function yet.”
