Is the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector worth buying?

Yes, if you watch lying down: the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector costs £47.99 and its rotating body aims the picture at the ceiling instead of the far wall, and 124 owners rate it 4.8. The money also buys Android 11 running inside the machine, so iPlayer, Netflix and YouTube live on the projector rather than on a stick in the HDMI port. It is a bedroom purchase first and a living-room purchase second.

The case gets weaker if sharpness is what you want, because the picture comes from a 1280 x 720 panel with 921,600 pixels to fill. The AKIYO O2 costs £39.70, £8.29 less, and carries the same panel with a lens built for tighter rooms. Buy the DoingDo for the ceiling angle and the 4.8 from 124 owners, not for pixel count.

What does the 1.37:1 throw ratio actually mean?

A 100-inch picture needs about 3 metres of room, and that number decides where this projector can live. Its 1.37:1 ratio is a long throw for a unit this small, so a three-metre gap between bed and wall fills the wall, while the image can be set anywhere from 40 inches at the short end up to 130 inches. It also starts working from 0.6 m, so nothing stops you putting it close and living with a smaller picture.

Brightness is where the units stop matching. Its 15,000 lumens cannot be placed on the same scale as the 200 ANSI lumens of the £39.99 YOTON Y4PRO, because ANSI is the measurement taken the same way across brands. Six projectors around it give an ANSI figure between 200 and 550, and the contrast ratio of 1,500:1 belongs to a dark room whatever the brightness unit says. With the curtains shut it holds up; with the lights on it does not.

What comes in the box and how big is it?

The box holds the projector, a power adapter, a remote and the user manual, so nothing extra is needed on day one. The body measures 15.2 cm long, 10.5 cm wide and 16.5 cm high, which fits a bedside table but not a shelf already carrying books, and it is built to sit on a flat surface rather than hang from a bracket. A 3.5 mm jack takes wired headphones, while HDMI and USB take laptops, consoles and drives.

Android 11 runs with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, enough for three or four streaming apps without deleting one to install the next, and the KIDOZ app arrives installed with content for younger viewers. Bluetooth 5.4 pairs a soundbar or headphones, and dual-band Wi-Fi handles mirroring from an iPhone or an Android phone. The remote and the push buttons on the body both work, and the warranty runs for one year.

Where does the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector fall short?

The panel is 1280 x 720, so a 1080p or 4K stream is decoded and then shown at 921,600 pixels. A native 1080p projector like the XuanPad at £129.99 fills 2,073,600 pixels, and the gap shows on subtitles, menus and football score graphics. In a dark bedroom this is easy to forget; on a big screen it is not.

The 1.37:1 lens is the second limit, because 100 inches needs roughly 3 metres and a box room with 1.5 m between the bed and the wall gets a much smaller picture. The third is the mounting: it sits on a table or a bed frame, and there is no ceiling bracket in the box. Only 124 people have rated it so far, which is a thin base next to the thousands behind the cheaper AKIYO models.

DoingDo or AKIYO O2 or XuanPad: which one for you?

Take the DoingDo when the picture goes on the ceiling and the room gives it three metres: £47.99 buys Android 11, 2GB of RAM and a 4.8 score from 124 owners. The AKIYO O2 answers the opposite problem for £39.70, £8.29 less, because its 0.8:1 lens makes 35 inches from 0.6 m and 200 inches from 3.5 m, with Android 14 and 4.1 from 1,614 owners. A short room favours the AKIYO; a longer room where you want to lie flat favours the DoingDo.

The XuanPad 40000L at £129.99 is the step up, and £82 more buys a native 1920 x 1080 panel, Netflix pre-installed and autofocus in under a second, rated 4.4 by 2,169 owners. If a 720p picture and a 15,000-lumen headline do not trouble you, keep the £82; if sharpness is the whole point, spend it.

Questions people ask

How far away does the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector need to be?

About 3 metres for a 100-inch picture. It starts working from 0.6 m and copes with image sizes from 40 to 130 inches, so it suits a room with a decent gap between the bed and the wall.

Can the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector play 4K?

It decodes 4K and 1080p video, then shows the result on its own 1280 x 720 panel. You get the 4K signal into the machine, not four times the pixels out of it.

What is in the box with the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector?

The projector, a power adapter, a remote control and a user manual. Nothing else is required to start watching, although headphones or a soundbar plug in through the 3.5 mm jack or Bluetooth 5.4.

What warranty comes with the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector?

One year. That is the standard cover at this price, so keep the order details safe and register the machine when it arrives.

How much storage does the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector have?

16GB of storage with 2GB of RAM, running Android 11. That holds three or four streaming apps comfortably, and the KIDOZ app for younger viewers is already installed.

What can you connect to the DoingDo Bedroom Ceiling Projector?

HDMI and USB for consoles, laptops and drives, a 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones, plus Bluetooth 5.4 for a soundbar and dual-band Wi-Fi for mirroring a phone or tablet.
