The HP LaserJet MFP M235sdw is the best-rated machine in our laser-printer ranking, at 4.5 stars across 525 ratings, and it takes third place as the all-in-one to buy if you need to scan and copy as well as print. It is a compact mono laser that prints, scans through an automatic document feeder, and copies, with automatic two-sided printing, Wi-Fi and a first page out in about seven seconds. For a home office that wants one tidy machine to cover the paperwork, it does the lot.

It sits behind the two Brother-friendly picks above it only on running cost — as an HP, its toner costs more per page than Brother's, so factor the replacement cartridge in if you print heavily. Two entries on the listing are worth reading with a raised eyebrow: the specification records the printer's dimensions as "3.08 x 4.18 x 2.94 metres", which would make it bigger than a room — plainly centimetres entered in the wrong unit — and the network field lists only Ethernet even though reliable Wi-Fi is the headline feature. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing rather than our own testing.

What buyers actually say

Excellent value

“Fast delivery and an excellent value printer. Easy to set up and use. Printer prints from my iPhone via the app - which is actually pretty good. Takes a few seconds from pressing print to paper coming out but once it does multiple pages come out one after another. It scans and photocopies too although I haven't tried these yet. Very good seller.”

Highly recommended

“Bought this to replace a 12 year old multifunction HP printer that provided excellent service. A lot has changed in 12 years and the new printer is a lot easier to set up, and it gives first class printing results. Only used it a few times for printing and I am very impressed with the scanner. Bought my first HP laser printer 4L in 1994 and have always used HP printers since then. Highly recommended.”

Questions people ask

Does the HP M235sdw scan and copy?

Yes — unlike the print-only lasers higher up our ranking, this is a genuine all-in-one. It has a real scanner with an automatic document feeder, so it prints, scans and copies from the machine itself, not just through a phone app.

How big is it really?

The listing's dimensions field reads "3.08 x 4.18 x 2.94 metres", which is obviously wrong — that would be larger than a room. Those are centimetres entered in the wrong unit, so the printer is roughly 30.8 x 41.8 x 29.4 cm and weighs 9.5 kg. It is genuinely compact for an all-in-one.

Does it connect over Wi-Fi?

Yes. Wi-Fi is the headline feature and it reconnects automatically, though the specification's network field lists only Ethernet. Both work, and it also prints from a phone through the HP app.

How fast is it?

The specification gives 27 pages a minute in A4, with the first page out in about seven seconds — quick for an all-in-one. It does automatic two-sided printing, which the listing calls the fastest duplex in its class.

What does it cost to run?

The listing does not publish a cost per page. As our ranking notes, HP toner costs more per page than Brother's, so for heavy printing the Brother DCP-L2627DWE all-in-one is cheaper to feed; for moderate volumes the convenience of this top-rated machine usually wins.

Is it colour?

No. It is a monochrome (black-and-white) laser. It scans and copies in mono. If you need colour output, see the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw further down our ranking, but remember a colour laser has four toners and a higher cost per page.
