Rank #2 in Best 1TB External Hard Drive 2026: 10 Ranked, and the 625 MB/s Myth
WD Elements 1TB Portable Hard Drive
Price and rating as shown on Amazon when we collected them. Both change.
The WD Elements 1 TB is the second entry in this guide: a 2.5-inch, USB-powered portable drive from Western Digital, listed at £93.00 with a rating of 4.7 from 276,370 ratings. It is the version of the argument this guide keeps making — a drive whose advertised read speed actually matches the hardware inside it.
Where three listings in this guide quote 625 MB/s, this one does not: its read speed is given as 100 Megabytes Per Second, which is what a 5400 RPM 2.5-inch disk can really manage. The same spec table, though, carries a "Media Speed" of 5120 MB/s. That is five gigabytes a second, or about 40 Gbps — eight times the 5 Gbps a USB 3.0 cable can carry. A third figure in that same table, a data transfer rate of 1 Gigabits Per Second, matches neither of the other two. The bullets give no number at all, promising only "ultra fast data transfer with USB 3.0". Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing for this drive, not from any testing we have carried out.

An average hides its own shape. This is the spread behind the 4.7 stars.

Questions people ask
What read speed does the WD Elements 1 TB give?
The spec table lists a read speed of 100 Megabytes Per Second, which is the sort of figure a 5400 RPM 2.5-inch disk can actually reach.
Does this WD Elements listing use the 625 MB/s figure?
No. The bullet points give no speed number at all, but the spec table does list a Media Speed of 5120 MB/s — five gigabytes a second.
Why does 5120 MB/s look wrong?
5120 MB/s is about 40 Gbps. The drive's own interface is listed as USB 3.0, which carries 5 Gbps, so the media speed figure is eight times what the connection can move.
Do the three speed figures on this page agree?
No. The WD Elements 1 TB lists a read speed of 100 Megabytes Per Second, a media speed of 5120 MB/s and a data transfer rate of 1 Gigabits Per Second in the same spec table.
Do the dimensions match?
No. One bullet refers to hard disks with a maximum size of approximately 13.2 x 10.5 x 3.8 cm, while the item dimensions field gives the drive as 11.1 x 8.2 x 1.5 centimetres.
Does the WD Elements 1 TB need its own power supply?
No. The product features field lists BUS powered and a hot swap function, so it takes its power over the USB connection.
Will it work with a Mac?
The bullets say the WD Elements 1 TB is compatible with Windows 10 or 8.1 and that you should reformat it for MAC OS.
