The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox 5TB takes number 8 in this guide, and it is the cleanest example of what the guide is about: a spec sheet that does not agree with itself. The title says 5 TB, Digital Storage Capacity says 5 TB and Hard-Drive Size says 5 TB, so the capacity is consistent here — but the same spec table lists Media Speed at 600 MB/s, on a drive that it also describes as a 5400 RPM mechanical 2.5-inch disk weighing 240 g.

That 600 MB/s is the tell. Every other 5 TB drive in this guide declares between 100 and 130 MB/s, and 600 MB/s is the ceiling of the USB 3.0 bus, not the speed of a spinning platter. The listing adds a second, different figure for the same job: Data Transfer Rate is given as 480 Megabits Per Second — megabits, not megabytes — so two numbers on one product page describe two different drives. One more field, Cache Memory Installed Size, also reads 5 TB, which is the whole capacity rather than a cache size. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing for this product; we have not tested it ourselves.

What buyers actually say

Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon

Verified purchase

“Older titles can still run directly from the external hard drive ( a little slower load times though). Transfer times for large games are under 5 mins ( such as rdr2 ) the transfer times are not an issue mostly under 3 mins either way ? I'd say this is a great piece of kit, value for money and a great update to any home console set up. And you can take it anywhere ??? If you're a casual player like me this is a no brainer ? Great price, great performance and very easy to use? 5* imo”

“Plenty of space for a decent library of games. Had a long time now and never had an issue, very reliable. The fact that it doesn't require it's own power supply and can draw from the console makes it very easy to set up. Unfortunately cannot play SeriesX/S games directly from it, but that's not Seagate's fault”

Questions people ask

How fast is the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox 5TB?

The listing gives two different answers. Media Speed is listed as 600 MB/s, while Data Transfer Rate is listed as 480 Megabits Per Second in the same advert. The drive is described elsewhere as a 5400 RPM mechanical disk, which is the figure that matches how other 5 TB disks in this guide are specified.

Can I play Xbox Series X/S games straight from it?

No. Seagate states that Series X/S games can only be stored on external drives and must be transferred to the internal SSD of the console to be played, because USB storage does not offer the required speed. Xbox One games can be played directly from the drive on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Which consoles does Seagate list as compatible?

The listing says it is Xbox-certified and compatible with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and all generations of Xbox One for storage. The Compatible Video Game Console Models field names only Microsoft Xbox Series X.

How much does the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox hold?

5 TB. Digital Storage Capacity, Hard-Drive Size and the product title all state 5 TB. Note that a separate field, Cache Memory Installed Size, also reads 5 TB — that is the full capacity of the drive, not a cache figure.

What size and weight is it?

Seagate lists the item dimensions as 12 x 8 x 2 centimetres, the item weight as 240 g, and the Hard Disk Form Factor as 2.5 inches. The product is listed as portable and as one item.

What connection does it use?

The title says USB 3.2 Gen 1, while the Hard Disk Interface and Hardware Connectivity fields both say USB 3.0, and Network Connectivity Technology says USB.
