The Panasonic LUMIX DC-S5 sits at number seven in this guide, priced at £1,100.00 with a rating of 4.5 from 190 ratings. The star breakdown in the listing is one of the few sets of numbers here that hangs together: 80 five-star, 4 four-star, 8 three-star, 2 two-star and 6 one-star across 100 entries, which averages out to exactly 4.5. The camera's headline figure also holds up — the first highlight describes a 24MP full-frame sensor and the spec field for effective still resolution says 24.2 MP, with the sensor size given as Full Frame (35mm).

Where this listing trips over itself is the product name, which reads "Camera body, 4K 60P Video Recording with Flip Screen and Wi-Fi, L-Mount, 20-60 mm Lens" — a body and a 20-60mm lens described in the same line. The spec fields carry further oddities: the aspect ratio is given as 1.33:1, which is a 4:3 shape, on a sensor the same listing calls full frame; the maximum aperture is "5.6 Millimetres", a figure normally written as f/5.6; and the maximum shutter speed is listed as 60 Seconds against a minimum of 1/16,000 Seconds, which reads the opposite way round from what those labels usually mean. The file format field says JPEG, on a camera whose highlights are largely about 12-bit RAW video over HDMI. Everything on this page is taken from the Amazon listing as it appears; we have not tested the LUMIX DC-S5 ourselves.

“I have been researching between, Panasonic, overly expensive Sony, Nikon and Canon, first I wanted to get Canon R6 which turned out it overheats and after overheating its unfunctional, Lumix S5 does not overheat. Sony is good but too expensive, If you are thinking of getting A73, please don't, that camera doesn't have 10 bit and also is old camera, the colour science is not the same as Panasonic's best colour science, Autofocus in APS-C is perfect, in full-frame mode is almost perfect. Firmware 2.1 made the AF very good. You can record 6K with external recording with this camera. 😃 I believe the next firmware update will make the AF even better. I love this camera. Lumix S1H is an approved camera by Netflix for film making and this Lumix S5 is smaller but and better than S1H. THIS IS NOT A ENTRY LEVEL CAMERA.”

“Just upgraded from a Panasonic G6 to this wonderful new camera. I absolutely love it. I'm an amateur photographer and love to take candid photos of friends at events and gatherings - this is great!! Good high quality images with wonderful bokeh effect. Only downside is I wish they did a kit with the 24-105mm lens rather than 20-60mm lens - the extra length would be nice!”

Questions people ask

What sensor does the Panasonic LUMIX DC-S5 use?

The first highlight describes a 24MP full-frame sensor, the spec field for effective still resolution says 24.2 MP, and the photo sensor size is given as Full Frame (35mm) with the type listed as CMOS.

Does the Panasonic LUMIX DC-S5 come with a lens?

The product name lists "Camera body" and "L-Mount, 20-60 mm Lens" in the same line, so the listing reads as a body and a 20-60mm lens at once. One Amazon reviewer says they wish the kit used a 24-105mm lens rather than the 20-60mm.

What video can the Panasonic LUMIX DC-S5 record?

The name says 4K 60P and the spec field says 4K UHD 2160p. A highlight states 4K 4:2:0 10-bit up to 60/50p or 4K 4:2:2 10-bit at 30/25p internally, with C4K options, and firmware v2.3 adds 5.9K/4K/Anamorphic 3.5K 12-bit RAW over HDMI to an Atomos Ninja V or Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR.

How much is the Panasonic LUMIX DC-S5 and how is it rated?

The listing price is £1,100.00 and the rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 190 ratings.

Why do the shutter speed fields look wrong?

The spec field gives the maximum shutter speed as 60 Seconds and the minimum as 1/16,000 Seconds; quoted as listed, those two labels sit the opposite way round from what the numbers normally mean.

How much stabilisation does the Panasonic LUMIX DC-S5 offer?

A highlight states that combining the in-body and lens stabilisation, the Dual I.S. II system, gives up to 6.5 stops of benefit, and the spec field lists the image stabilisation type as Dual, Sensor-shift.
