Rank #9 in Best Studio Monitors 2026: 10 Ranked, and the Numbers That Lie
M-Audio BX5BT 5-inch Studio Monitors, Pair
Price and rating as shown on Amazon when we collected them. Both change.
The M-Audio BX5BT is a pair of powered 5-inch desktop studio monitors, listed at £155.00 and rated 4.5 out of 5 from 65 ratings. It comes in at number 9 in this guide, and the reason it is worth a second look is not a headline figure but the unit count. This listing is the pair: £155.00 buys both speakers. Elsewhere in this guide the same range's single BX5 monitor is listed at £92.00, which is £184.00 for two — so the pair listing is the cheaper way to buy the same arrangement of drivers.
The spec table then argues with the copy beside it. Frequency Response is recorded as "20000 KHz", which would be 20 MHz; the rest of the page is describing a speaker that reaches 20 kHz, the ordinary figure for a monitor this size. The same table also lists a "Subwoofer Speaker Diameter" of 5 inches, although the BX5BT has no separate subwoofer — the 5-inch driver is the Kevlar woofer named in the bullets, not a sub. Both of those come from the Amazon listing exactly as written. We have not tested these speakers ourselves; everything on this page is taken from the advert.

What buyers actually say

Verified purchase“Very good speakers. I am using these in a small room (3.5 x 4m). The 5 inch cone is a great size for this amount of space. The bass is strong, punchy and deep, certainly enough for my own musical tastes which include pretty much most genres. The low frequencies contain good tonal qualities from my connected dac/iPhone combo. Mids are detailed with a good fullness to the male vocal while the female vocals are also accurate and detailed, quite well balanced to be fair. Highs are not super-forward or fatiguing but smooth and very easy on the ear. Stereo image is good. The sound pushes into the room nicely and so without the speaker giving a boxy sound or in other words the music stuck inside the speaker, these are a decent room filler.Build quality is good, nice thick boxes and a very plush set of two buttons at the bottom of the speaker for DSP and Bluetooth. These buttons have a very nicely judged smooth push operation. The Burr Brown chip does a good job in these and I expect the Bluetooth is running through that chip too as for the standard SBC codec it sounds very good, nice and clear enough.I connected my Amazon Firestick to the speakers and again sound was decent and without any lipsync issues. Gaming via Xbox app was without any problems. iPhone connection with Apple Music via Bluetooth sounds fine and easily an all day listen.I can easily recommend BX5BT for small rooms and have plenty of power! I did not push these speakers past 1.00 o'clock on the volume and that was more than enough for my room size. The connecting cable (also good quality) for the passive speaker is around 1.5m but these are easily found online if you want longer lengths. Cables can and do make a big difference with speakers. I have spent enough money and time to know this as a truth and not snake oil. These BX5BT's benefit from silver plated occ/ocf copper cable or higher and will be more revealing when better cable is used and that goes for the power cable too. I guarantee you will hear a difference. I tested various cables with these speakers and found 12 strand Silver Plated OCC Litz braid cable to work superbly with these speakers allowing a superior soundstage with detail and clarity and great instrument separation. So in conclusion, imo currently these are one of the best all rounder speakers under £200. These are very hard not to like!A most excellent Amazon service taboot throughout my purchase.”
Verified purchase“Well worth paying a premium for this brand (I initially bought lower priced speakers from an unheard of brand that had multiple issues). These speakers do everything I need:- powerful sound - rocking!- no distortion or vibration, even when played LOUD- amazing stereo separation - great for monitoring- when used as PC speakers (Bluetooth) they don't "go to sleep" like others when there is a period of inactivity (or if they do, they wake up instantly without you knowing)- by tweaking Windows settings, was able to have them auto-connect when turning on the PC (I asked Grok for help with this)I did find the preset modes ("Hype" and "Flat") a little dull, but the M-Audio app allows custom EQ - it's a bit fiddly to use but once you get it right the sound is incredible in my opinion.I suppose I am an audiophile but don't want to spend silly money on desktop speakers. These speakers, whilst being a little more expensive than the unheard of brands, are so - so much better.”

The listing states 240W of bi-amplified power, delivered through a 5-inch Kevlar woofer and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter with waveguide.
Can I change how they sound?
