Price and rating as shown on Amazon when we collected them. Both change.

The TOPDON TS001 is a thermal camera that plugs into an Android phone, tablet or Windows laptop instead of standing on its own — the listing says it has no built-in battery and runs off the device it is attached to, drawing as little as 0.35W. It comes tenth in this guide at £262.99, with a 4.1 rating from 147 ratings, a 9mm adjustable lens and a claimed detection range of up to 500 metres on a human figure.

The number worth stopping on is 512x384. It appears in the title and in the first bullet, but the same bullet explains where it comes from: the sensor is 256x192, and image enhancement increases the IR resolution to 512x384. That is 49,152 real sensor pixels against 196,608 in the advertised figure — four times as many. The listing itself also contradicts itself on power: one bullet says there is no built-in battery, while the specification table lists the camera as battery powered, rechargeable, with a battery life of 4 hours. Everything on this page comes from the Amazon listing and the customer reviews quoted below; we have not tested the camera ourselves.

What buyers actually say

Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon

Verified purchase

“Works great, doesn't use much battery. I've used it at less than a foot for diagnosis of computer motherboards and a little use at long distance to spot wildlife in the trees behind my house. Purchased at a discount. Although it doesn't seem to want to use the enhanced mode on my Galaxy Note 10 plus 5g. All in all I would recommend. Reasonable price, effective sensor. Great for short and long range. 5 stars.”

The bullets say it has no built-in battery and operates solely on the power of your smartphone or tablet, consuming as little as 0.35W. The specification table on the same listing says 'Battery Powered', 'Rechargeable' and 'Battery Life: 4 Hours', so the two parts of the listing do not agree.

How far away can it detect a person?

The listing claims effective detection at distances of up to 500 metres for a human.
