The Sony WF-1000XM6 take ninth place in our wireless earbuds ranking, and on specification they are the most capable pair here: Sony's flagship noise cancelling, top-end codecs, the fullest app in the category, a 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz hi-res range and the tuning that made the XM line famous. On Android, where its codecs shine, this is the technical peak at GBP 249.
It finishes ninth on purpose, and the reason is the gap between promise and proof. At 3.9 stars over just 625 ratings it is both the dearest pair here and one of the lowest-rated, and its breakdown carries 18 per cent one-star — the highest one-star share of any earbud in this ranking. A dear, new, polarised product like that should give any buyer pause on a GBP 249 purchase; early flagship reviews often reflect firmware and fit teething, but at this price you are paying most for the badge and the spec sheet, and the evidence has not caught up. Its listing also fumbles its battery fields: it calls 24 hours the "Battery Average Life" when that is the case total, and prints "Battery Charge Time: 36 Hours", which is not a charge time at all. The real single listen with noise cancelling is in the usual 6-to-8-hour range. Even a GBP 249 flagship, in other words, cannot get its own numbers straight. Only for a specific buyer: someone on Android who wants Sony's flagship noise cancelling and codecs and is not counting the pennies. Why do they rank ninth if they are the flagship?
Because our ranking weights proven value over the spec sheet. They are the most capable pair on paper, but they are the most expensive and among the lowest-rated, on a thin, polarised sample. That combination is a warning at GBP 249, not a recommendation.
Are they better on Android or iPhone?
Android. Their advantage is top-end codec support for hi-res audio, which needs a compatible Android source. On iPhone they work but you lose the codec edge, and the AirPods Pro 3 make more sense in the Apple world for less.
Is the Bluetooth really only 5.0?
That is what the spec table says, which is low for a 2026 flagship and likely a catalogue error rather than the real radio. It is one more field this listing does not have right, alongside the mislabelled battery figures.
Should I buy these or the Bose?
For outright quiet, the Bose blocks more noise for over a hundred pounds less. Buy the Sony only if you specifically want its Android codecs and app and accept the price and the current ratings; otherwise better-proven pairs give more certainty.
