In practice the 1/4in drive is the point — it is the size that fits interior trim screws, bike bolts and flat-pack fittings without over-torquing them. The sockets are made to ISO 1174 and DIN 3120, the compact case keeps each piece identifiable, and 422g means the set travels. Bahco covers it for 2 years.

That said, 1/4in drive will not shift a wheel nut or a suspension bolt; for those you need 1/2in drive, and this set has none. The listing also never itemises how many of the 25 pieces are sockets and how many are accessories, so 25 is the only breakdown you get.

Second on review depth: 3,424 ratings at 4.7, with 81% five-star and 1% one-star. The listing calls it a socket wrench set with bits, which means the 108 count spans driver bits as well as sockets, plus the two ratchet handles.

Meanwhile the two drive sizes cover ground most single-drive kits cannot: 1/4in for small fasteners, 1/2in for wheel nuts and suspension work. Both 72-tooth ratchets are reversible with a quick-release button, the sockets are Cr-V steel, and the whole thing is 7kg in a 37 x 8 x 28cm case.

However, there is no 3/8in drive here, which is the size most people reach for on brake calipers and mid-size bolts. As with most kits at this price, the listing does not say how many of the 108 pieces are sockets.

Crucially, this is the honest end of the counting problem. The 18 pieces are 13 pass-through sockets (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22 and 24mm), one 60-tooth pass-through ratchet, two adaptors at 1/4in and 3/8in, and two extension bars at 80mm and 150mm. Nothing here is padding the number.

Even so, £49.89 for 13 sockets is more per socket than the Amazon Basics set at £37.52, and 4.6 is the lowest rating in the top three, with 3% of ratings at one star. If you want a standard 1/4 socket set rather than spline pass-throughs, this is the wrong buy.

At £26.60 this is the cheapest 3/8in drive metric socket set in the group, and it holds 2,891 ratings at 4.7. Worth noting that the spec table disagrees with the title: the title and the included-components line say 18 piece, while the Number of Items field says 1.

That said, if you need to know exactly what arrives — a 10-21mm socket set in one drive size — buy from a listing that states it plainly. The 34-piece figure does not say how many of those pieces are sockets, and the 33-piece set name says something different again.

This one proves the headline-number problem best: 172 pieces, of which 63 are sockets — 20 in 1/4in drive, 16 in 3/8in, 22 in 1/2in and five 1/4in Torx. That is about 37% of the box. The rest is extensions, adaptors, bits and three ratchet handles.

At the same time, three drive sizes in one case is rare below £80, and it means the 1/4in sockets handle trim while the 1/2in sockets take wheel nuts. The sockets are heat-treated Cr-V, every socket carries a visible size marking, and the blow-moulded case holds each piece in its own slot.

The catch is weight and price: 9.4kg, and £79.04 works out at £1.25 per socket. As a result, anyone who only turns small fasteners is paying for two drive sizes they will never use.

Even so, if you need sockets rather than bits, the Draper 1/4in set gives you 21 sockets for £8.96 less. Here you are buying a screwdriver kit with a socket rail attached, and 663 ratings is the second-smallest sample in the top ten.

The spec field says Number of Pieces: 1 while the title says 46 — the same listing glitch that catches the Draper Expert. Read the bullet and you get 14 shallow 6-point metric sockets (6mm to 22mm), 11 deep 6-point metric sockets and nine shallow 12-point SAE sockets. That is 34 sockets out of 46, the highest socket share here.

At the same time, 3/8in drive is the versatile middle size, and deep sockets alongside shallow in one case is unusual at £37.52. The steel is chrome molybdenum with a black phosphate finish and laser-etched markings, built to current ANSI and ASME specifications.

However, 4.5 is the lowest rating in the top six, with 4% of ratings at two stars or below, and there are no 1/4in or 1/2in sockets. Anyone working on both trim screws and wheel nuts still needs a second set.
