Lux is not brightness. It is lumens landing on a surface, and it falls with the square of the distance — so a lux figure without a distance attached is not a specification, it is a number that cannot be checked. Lumie states that its Mini "provides 10,000 lux at a distance of 12cm", and stating it reveals what everybody else is hiding: at 24 centimetres that same lamp delivers 2,500 lux, and at the 50 centimetres you would actually sit from a desk lamp it delivers 576 — under 6% of the headline. Meanwhile one listing let something slip that settles the argument for the whole category: it fills in the Light Output field with 1,000 lumens, and then claims 10,000 lux. Ten thousand lux means ten thousand lumens per square metre, so a thousand lumens can only produce it across a tenth of a square metre with nothing lost anywhere — and that lamp radiates in every direction.
