It takes first place on the strength of the review base — 594 ratings, the largest in this list, at a 4.2 average — and on one dull but useful detail. Its 220 L/min airflow figure is repeated in the first bullet and in the specification table, which is rare among the machines here. At £199 you get 50 litres, 10 bar and a 1500W oil-free motor.

In practice the vertical format is the selling point. The tank stands on a 350mm-diameter footprint, which matters in a single garage where a horizontal 50-litre machine would eat the bench space. There are two quick couplings, so a hose can stay connected while a blow gun comes on and off. Worth noting: the specification table lists a 10-metre hose, while the included-components line says an 8m hose and accessory kit. One of those is wrong.

The counter-argument is noise. Scheppach claims 97 dB, the loudest air compressor here, so it is not a machine for a shared wall or a small terraced garage at nine in the evening. Meanwhile, the 13-piece kit contains a tyre inflator, blow gun, extension nozzles and valve adapters but no spray gun — for spray painting you buy the gun separately.

Second place goes to the biggest tank here by a distance: 150 litres, 3HP, 10 bar and a claimed 75 dB from a belt-drive pump. That is roughly what an air compressor for workshop duty is meant to look like — a spray gun or a die grinder can run for minutes rather than seconds before the motor kicks in. The catch is the evidence base: 49 ratings at 4.4, with 11 one-star reviews among them.

Airflow is where the listing gets slippery. The title and bullets claim 14CFM, which is around 400 L/min. The specification table's airflow field, however, reads '11 Cubic Centimetres Per Minute' — a unit that cannot describe compressor output at all. As a result there is no delivered-air figure you can compare against the cheaper machines here.

It is also not a portable machine, whatever the style field says. At 80 kg and 131 cm long it needs a floor position and two people to move, and the belt-drive pump needs oil and belt checks that the oil-free units do not. If you rent, move workshops, or have a single garage bay, this is the wrong shape of purchase.

Third place is the most-reviewed machine in this list: 944 ratings at a 4.3 average, at £129. That is a lot of evidence for the money. As a 24 litre air compressor it sits at the small end, but the 1200W oil-free motor claims 180 L/min of suction and 8 bar, which covers tyres, blow guns and light nailing.

The spec table contains one number that is plainly a data-entry error: 'maximum horsepower: 1610'. No 1200W machine makes 1610 hp, and that field should be ignored. The rest is more believable — 24-litre tank, 16 kg, 56 cm long, a quick-release coupling and a drain plug for condensate. In theory that is a genuine one-person lift.

Two things rule it out for some buyers. It claims 96.4 dB, loud enough that hearing protection stops being optional. And with an 8 bar ceiling and a 24-litre tank, it is not the machine for spraying large panels — the motor will be running more than it is resting.

Fourth place goes to the quiet one. Einhell claims 54 dB (LpA) for the TE-AC 270/50 Silent Plus, which is 5 dB below the next quietest and roughly 40 dB below the loudest machines here. For a garage under a bedroom, or a workshop in a terrace, that is the whole reason to buy it. Meanwhile the tank is a full 50 litres and the motor is 1500W.

The catch: there is no airflow figure anywhere in the listing. Not in the bullets, not in the specification table. Every other machine here at least quotes an intake number, even when that number contradicts itself. For a silent air compressor at £359.95, that is a strange gap — you are paying for quiet without being told what delivered air you get for it.

It also caps out at 8 bar and weighs 42.8 kg, so it is a wheel-it-around-the-garage machine rather than a carry-it-upstairs one. If you need 10 bar for a particular tool, or you are spraying anything larger than a wing mirror, this is not the one.

However, two numbers in the same listing disagree with each other. The first bullet calls the machine 'especially quiet'; the sound level field says 97 Decibels. That is the loudest band in this list, not a quiet one. The weight is inconsistent too — 18.5 kg in the bullet, 20 kg in the specification table. By contrast, the tank volume, pressure and airflow figures do line up across both fields.

Who should skip it: anyone working within earshot of other people. At a claimed 97 dB this is a shed or detached-garage machine, not a kitchen one, and 97 dB is what the data says however the marketing line phrases it. Worth noting, the 13-piece kit covers inflation, blowing and cleaning; it does not include a spray gun.

Sixth, and the listing that best illustrates the problem this article is about. The title says '750W / 2hp' — those are not the same figure, and 750W is nearer 1hp. The bullet then claims '2HP Performance', while the specification table says 1.5 kilowatts, which is about 2hp. It runs from a standard 13A plug. Even so, the 7 bar in the specification table sits below the 118 psi in the title, which is around 8.1 bar. Pick whichever number suits.

It is worth buying if you want low noise and a large tank, and can live with modest delivered airflow. It is the wrong buy if you are running a die grinder or a spray gun for long stretches — the figures simply do not support it.

Seventh. A 1HP, 50-litre horizontal machine at £225.99, with 168 ratings at 4.2. The claim that matters is the 59 dB noise figure, second only to the Einhell Silent in this list, and the price sits £134 below that machine. That combination — 50 litres, low noise, mid price — is genuinely unusual.

The trade-off is airflow. 130 L/min of aspirated air from a 1HP motor is the lowest of any 50-litre machine in this ranking, and lower than some of the 24-litre machines. In practice that means a tank that fills slowly and empties fast under load; a blow gun is fine, an air sander is not. The horizontal layout also takes 76.4 cm of floor or bench.

Not for you if you need sustained tool use or 10 bar — this one stops at 8 bar. Also worth noting the review distribution: 13 one-star ratings out of roughly 100, a higher proportion of complaints than the 4.2 average alone suggests. In short, buy it for quiet, not for volume.

Eighth, and the clearest example of the headline problem. In the title, the TAC24L delivers 250 L/min. In the specification table the airflow field reads 210 litres per minute. In the bullets it is 120 L/min at 6 bar and 100 L/min at 8 bar. Those are three different stories about the same machine, and only the bullet version describes air delivered to a tool.

The title, the capacity field and the model name all say 24 litres. The tank volume field says 20 litres, and the first bullet says 'Actual Tank Capacity: 20L'. That is roughly 17% less air storage than the name implies.

Two other units are inconsistent. Maximum pressure is given as 700 kilopascals, about 7 bar, rather than the bar figures used everywhere else in this list.
