Best 4TB External Hard Drive 2026: 9 Ranked, Specs Compared

By · Updated

Every drive in this guide claims to be the best 4TB external hard drive on Amazon, and not one of their spec sheets agrees with itself. The £143.16 Seagate Portable lists an 18-inch form factor and 4 TB of cache. The Toshiba Canvio Partner says '3.5 Inches' in one field and '2.5-inch' in another. The £89.91 ModusTech desktop drive quotes a 625 MB/s read speed from a mechanism its own listing gives as 5400 RPM. Two Toshiba drives state read speed as '445 Bytes Per Second' on a 5 Gbps interface. Two Western Digital listings advertise 'up to 6TB' on 4TB products. The one figure that survives across all nine is the 4TB capacity itself, and the price asked for it runs from £89.91 to £169.94.

We ranked nine candidates for the best 4TB external hard drive on Amazon using three honest criteria: whether the numbers inside each listing survive contact with each other, the price asked per terabyte, and what the rating histogram actually shows. Prices span £89.91 to £169.94 for the same headline capacity. Meanwhile, the cheapest 4TB USB hard drive here is also the only desktop model, and whether you want a 4TB portable hard drive for a laptop or the best portable hard drive 4TB for a console, the spec sheet is the first thing to check, not the last.

Seagate One Touch 4TB Portable Hard Drive

best 4TB external hard drive
£155.21 4.6 3,874 reviews

Ranked first on a 4.6 average from 3,874 ratings and a listing that pairs a 120 MB/s read speed with a 5400 RPM mechanism — rare agreement in this group.

Pros

  • 4.6 average from 3,874 ratings
  • 120 MB/s read speed stated alongside a 5400 RPM mechanism
  • Two-year limited warranty plus two-year Rescue Data Recovery Service
  • 268 g and 1.2 cm thick at 11.5 x 8 cm
  • One-year Mylio Create and four-month Adobe Creative Cloud Photography included

Cons

  • Cache memory listed as 4 TB, the same as the drive's full capacity
  • Data transfer rate given as 480 Mbps — the USB 2.0 limit — while the interface is USB 3.0
  • £155.21 makes it the second most expensive drive here
  • Needs reformatting for Time Machine on a Mac

What buyers actually say

Quoted from customer reviews on Amazon

“The Seagate One Touch 5TB External Hard Drive is an excellent combination of performance, portability, and reliability. The space gray finish gives it a modern premium appearance, while the slim lightweight design makes it easy to carry anywhere. Setting it up was quick and simple on both PC and Mac, and the drive was recognized instantly without any issues. The 5TB capacity provides more than enough room for photos, videos, documents, and backups, making it perfect for both personal and professional use. I also appreciate the password-protected hardware encryption, which adds an extra layer of security for important files. A stylish and dependable storage solution overall.”

“Buying a Seagate drive is always a no-brainer for reliable storage. I bought this 4TB One Touch specifically to use as a Time Machine backup for my Mac, and it works perfectly. You just have to do a quick erase/reformat in Mac's Disk Utility first so Time Machine can recognize it. Once that is done, the automatic backups run smoothly in the background. The built-in password hardware encryption also gives great peace of mind for keeping personal data secure. It's a slim, high-capacity, and dependable drive that does exactly what it needs to do.”

Check Price on Amazon More about the Seagate One Touch 4TB Portable Hard Drive

Anyone ranking the best 4TB external hard drive on reviews alone would start here. It carries a 4.6 average from 3,874 ratings, and its spec table is one of the few that puts a 120 MB/s read speed next to a 5400 RPM rotation speed without contradicting itself. At 268 g and 11.5 x 8 x 1.2 cm, it is a pocket drive in the literal sense.

In practice, the One Touch is the most feature-loaded drive in this group. The enclosure is brushed metal, backup runs on a single click or a daily, weekly or monthly schedule, and the bundle includes a one-year Mylio Create subscription and four months of Adobe Creative Cloud Photography. Seagate adds a two-year limited warranty and two years of Rescue Data Recovery Service.

The £155.21 price is where the doubts start. Cache memory is listed as 4 TB — the same figure as the drive's total capacity, which is not how cache works — and the data transfer rate reads 480 Megabits per second, the USB 2.0 ceiling, on a drive whose own interface field says USB 3.0. Worth noting, too: Mac users must reformat for Time Machine. If you want the lowest cost per terabyte, this is not it.

2

Seagate Basic 4TB Portable External Hard Drive

Seagate Basic 4TB portable external hard drive with USB 3.0 cable
£161.92 4.6 15,379 reviews

Second place on a 4.6 from 15,379 ratings and a 960 Mbps transfer claim, though its dimensions read 29.7 cm long — desktop-sized numbers on a portable drive.

Pros

  • 4.6 average from 15,379 ratings
  • 960 Mbps data transfer rate quoted, double the 480 Mbps on the One Touch
  • 260 g, with Windows plug-and-play and no software
  • Listed as compatible with desktop, laptop, Mac, smartphone, tablet and Nintendo Switch
  • Read speed quoted at 120 MB/s

Cons

  • Item dimensions of 29.7 x 20.3 x 5.1 cm do not match a 2.5-inch portable
  • Cache memory listed as '4' with no unit of measurement
  • 7200 RPM listed for a bus-powered portable drive
  • £161.92, £6.71 above the Seagate One Touch, with fewer bundled extras

“This no-frills 5TB external hard drive delivers exactly what it promises. The setup was effortless. I simply plugged it in, and the drive appeared instantly. Transferring nearly 600GB of data was a breeze, with consistent speeds of 130-140 MB/s that never dipped. For optimal performance, ensure you're using a USB 3 slot or faster. It's incredibly portable, easy to use, and offers fantastic value for money. Highly recommended – I'm already considering buying another.”

“I bought this to replace one I had for years with no trouble. It is small and compact, seems fast in transferring files and very quiet, I like the light that tells ma its working. But my favourite bit is that I can simply drag my files to the icon and it loads the to the hard drive and done.Would reccomend and buy again if needed.”

LittleMak
Check Price on Amazon More about the Seagate Basic 4TB Portable External Hard Drive

15,379 ratings at 4.6 is the second-largest review base in this round-up, and the listing quotes a 960 Mbps data transfer rate — double the 480 Mbps given for the Seagate One Touch. At £161.92 it is also £6.71 more expensive than the One Touch, which is worth stating plainly.

The pitch is simplicity: plug-and-play USB 3.0, drag-and-drop transfers, no software to install, and a listed compatibility range running from desktop and laptop to Mac, smartphone, tablet and Nintendo Switch. Windows buyers get the easiest ride; Mac owners have to reformat.

However, the numbers get loose. Item dimensions read 29.7 x 20.3 x 5.1 cm, closer to a desktop enclosure than the 2.5-inch portable the form factor claims. Cache memory is simply listed as '4', with no unit. And a 7200 RPM figure on a bus-powered portable is unusual when the read speed stays at the same 120 MB/s as its 5400 RPM stablemates. Skip it if you want the cheapest drive, or if you need documented performance figures.

3

Toshiba Canvio Partner 4TB Portable External Hard Drive

Toshiba Canvio Partner 4TB portable external hard drive in black
£163.99 4.5 12,648 reviews

Third on 4.5 from 12,648 ratings and a 5 Gbps transfer claim, but its own listing says 3.5 inches in one field and 2.5-inch in another.

Pros

  • 4.5 average from 12,648 ratings
  • 5 Gbps USB interface with no drivers or software needed
  • Shock sensors named as a feature in the listing
  • 2.5-inch mechanical drive per the listing's own product description
  • PlayStation 4 compatibility listed

Cons

  • Form factor given as 3.5 Inches in one field and 2.5-inch in another
  • Hardware connectivity lists Ethernet, which a portable USB drive has no port for
  • Read speed quoted as a 5 Gbps bus rate rather than a MB/s figure
  • £163.99 is the third-highest price in the group

12,648 ratings at 4.5 place it third by volume, and it is the only drive here whose listing names shock sensors as a feature. At the same time, it is the only one listing Ethernet under hardware connectivity, which a bus-powered portable drive cannot use.

Day to day this is a conventional 2.5-inch mechanical drive in a black plastic shell: no drivers, no software, plug into a USB port and files move. The bullets promise up to 5 Gbps, the title says USB 3.2 and the interface field says USB 3.0 — three labels, one plug.

If you are weighing up the best 4TB external hard drive for plain file storage, the contradiction to know about is the form factor: 3.5 Inches in one field, 2.5-inch in another, with the product description itself saying 2.5 inch mechanical hard drive. Read speed is given as 5 Gigabits Per Second, which is a bus rate rather than a disk speed. In short, buy it for the reviews, not for the spec sheet. Anyone wanting USB-C should look elsewhere.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive (STGX4000400)

Seagate Portable 4TB external hard drive in black
£143.16 4.5 265,604 reviews

The review volume leader by a distance — 265,604 ratings at 4.5 — yet its listing gives an 18-inch form factor and 4 TB of cache.

Pros

  • 265,604 ratings at 4.5, the largest review base here
  • £143.16, cheaper than the three drives ranked above it
  • 260 g and 11.7 x 8 x 2 cm
  • USB 3.0 with USB 2.0 backwards compatibility
  • Listed as working with PC, notebook, Xbox and PlayStation 4

Cons

  • Form factor listed as 18 Inches
  • Cache memory given as 4 TB, the drive's full capacity
  • Data transfer rate of 120 Megabits per second against a 120 Megabytes per second read speed
  • Amazon exclusive, so there is no competing retailer price

“I've used Seagate Hard Drives for years. This seemed good buy. As described. It formatted with my Xbox Series as hoped. Was unsure as this wasn't the Xbox branded one and specs were slightly different but still suitable and compatible as Rufus advised. Easy way to increase game storage. Series enhanced games will need to be moved to internal storage to play but old gen games usually play off these.”

“Massive storage and easy to use. You may lament the time it takes to transfer files but this is a limitation of PCs, USB etc. and not of this device. Best advice is to back up all your files frequently and then keep this drive at a remote, secure location”

This is the volume leader by a distance: 265,604 ratings at 4.5, more than seventeen times the next-largest review base here. If review volume is your main filter, this is the best 4TB portable hard drive in the round-up, and at £143.16 it undercuts the three drives ranked above it.

It is an Amazon exclusive, so you will not find it priced elsewhere. The drive is 260 g and 11.7 x 8 x 2 cm, plug-and-play on PC with drag-and-drop, USB 3.0 and backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Seagate lists PC, notebook, Xbox and PlayStation 4 compatibility.

The catch is the spec table. Form factor is listed as 18 Inches — nearly half a metre — and cache memory as 4 TB, the same as the whole drive. Data transfer rate reads 120 Megabits per second against a read speed of 120 Megabytes per second, an eightfold difference inside one listing. Buy it for the price and the review base; do not buy it for the numbers.

WD Elements 4TB Portable External Hard Drive, Black

Western Digital Elements 4TB portable external hard drive in black
£137.99 4.3 1,008 reviews

£137.99 is the cheapest bus-powered drive here, and the lightest at 227 g, with an enclosure over 50% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Pros

  • £137.99, the cheapest bus-powered drive here
  • 227 g, the lightest of the nine
  • 5 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface, backwards compatible with USB 3.0
  • Backup software with hourly, daily or monthly scheduling
  • Enclosure more than 50% post-consumer recycled plastic, with fully recyclable packaging

Cons

  • Bullet advertises 'up to 6TB capacity' on a 4TB drive
  • No rotational speed or read speed given in the spec table
  • Enclosure material listed as Aluminum/Glass while the bullet describes recycled plastic
  • 4.3 average with 9 one-star entries, the lowest score among the top five

“I had an old 2TB hard drive. When I decided to upgrade my operating system and transfer all my data to it, the drive kept shutting down during the process. I bought this new one WD, which cost twice cheaper than my old and the entire terabyte of data was transferred from my computer to the drive in just a few hours. I am very pleased with its fast performance and pocket-sized design.”

“Western Digital seems to be the leading HD manufacturer in the world, closely followed by Toshiba and Seagate. My previous WD hard is still working well after a good few years. As neither SSDs or USB memory sticks are reliable for unpowered data storage, it's still important to keep a traditional hard drive or two for archiving.Like most hard drives, this one will not run off an unpowered USB hub and needs to be directly plugged into a port on a laptop or PC.You can buy powered USB ports and docks but they can have issues of their own.”

The 'Big Leaf'
Check Price on Amazon More about the WD Elements 4TB Portable External Hard Drive, Black

At £137.99 this is the cheapest bus-powered drive here, £5.17 under the Seagate Portable, and the lightest at 227 g. It is also the only one whose listing talks about materials: an enclosure composed of more than 50% post-consumer recycled plastic and packaging over 50% post-consumer recycled pulp.

The interface is USB 3.2 Gen 1, quoted at 5 Gbps, with USB 3.0 backwards compatibility and a backup tool that runs to an hourly, daily or monthly schedule. It arrives formatted for Windows. If the best 4TB external hard drive for you is one that disappears into a bag, the 227 g weight is the figure that matters.

By contrast with the drives above, the spec table is thin. There is no rotational speed and no read speed at all. The first bullet advertises 'up to 6TB capacity' on a 4TB product, and the enclosure material field says Aluminum/Glass while the bullets describe recycled plastic. The 4.3 average is the lowest of the top five, with 9 one-star entries in the histogram. Avoid it if you need published performance figures.

WD_BLACK P10 4TB Game Drive, Camo

WD_BLACK P10 4TB portable game drive in camo finish
£140.99 4.2 41 reviews

130 MB/s claimed and a three-year limited warranty, but only 41 ratings, and 28 of its 100 histogram entries sit below five stars.

Pros

  • 130 MB/s read speed, the highest MB/s figure quoted in this group
  • Three-year limited warranty, the longest stated here
  • Listed for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, including game archiving
  • 249 g with a metal top cover
  • One month of Discord Nitro included

Cons

  • Only 41 ratings at 4.2, the smallest review base here
  • Bullet mentions 'up to 6TB capacity' on a 4TB product
  • Interface field says USB 2.0/3.0 while hardware connectivity says USB 3.2 Gen 1

130 MB/s is the highest read speed quoted on any 2.5-inch portable here, and the P10 is the only drive in the group with a three-year limited warranty. That said, the evidence base is thin: 41 ratings at 4.2.

It is built for consoles — Xbox Series X|S, with play-and-store for Xbox One games and archiving for Series X|S titles, plus PlayStation 5 for PS4 games. The camo metal top is cosmetic; underneath it is a 249 g mechanical drive on USB 3.2 Gen 1, with one month of Discord Nitro in the box.

Two problems sit in the listing. The first bullet claims 'up to 6TB capacity' on a 4TB drive. The interface field says USB 2.0/3.0 while hardware connectivity says USB 3.2 Gen 1, and 130 MB/s is not reachable over USB 2.0. Meanwhile the histogram shows 8 one-star and 7 two-star entries against 72 at five. If you want a large, settled review base before spending £140.99, this is not it.

Toshiba Canvio Gaming 4TB Portable External Hard Drive

Toshiba Canvio Gaming 4TB portable external drive in dark grey
£159.99 4.6 242 reviews

The most expensive drive here at £169.94, with a 445 Bytes Per Second read figure sitting next to its own 100 MB/s media speed.

Pros

  • 4.5 average from 274 ratings
  • 4TB holds up to 100 titles on the listing's own estimate
  • Firmware-customised Always-On mode and shock sensors
  • Listed for PlayStation, Xbox and PC consoles
  • 5400 RPM quoted alongside a 100 MB/s media speed

Cons

  • £169.94, the highest price here
  • Read speed listed as 445 Bytes Per Second against a 100 MB/s media speed
  • Form factor given as 3.5 Inches while the title says 2.5-inch

Check Price on Amazon More about the Toshiba Canvio Gaming 4TB Portable External Hard Drive

At £169.94 this is the priciest drive in the group, £80.03 above the cheapest, and it is the only one that quantifies a game library: up to 100 titles on 4TB. Its 4.5 average comes from 274 ratings.

The gaming angle is firmware rather than hardware — an 'Always-On' mode tuned to respond quickly, plus shock sensors and a dark grey metallic finish. Toshiba lists PlayStation, Xbox and PC compatibility, a 5400 RPM mechanism and a 100 MB/s media speed.

The catch is the read speed field: '445 Bytes Per Second', the same figure as the Canvio Flex, sitting next to a 100 MB/s media speed in the same table. Form factor is given as 3.5 Inches while the title says 2.5-inch, and the enclosure material is listed as Leather. At this price, with 5 one-star entries in the histogram, it only makes sense if the console-focused firmware is specifically what you want.

Toshiba Canvio Flex 4TB Portable Hard Drive, Warm Silver

Toshiba Canvio Flex 4TB portable hard drive in warm silver
£169.94 4.5 274 reviews

4.6 from 242 ratings and USB-C plus USB-A support, with a spec table that lists read speed as 445 Bytes Per Second.

Pros

  • Works with USB-C and USB-A devices from a single drive
  • Compatible with Mac, Windows, smartphone and tablet according to the listing
  • 5 Gbps transfer rate quoted
  • Warm silver finish, with a 2.5-inch form factor in the title

Cons

  • Read speed listed as 445 Bytes Per Second
  • Form factor given as 3.5 Inches in one field and 2.5-inch in another

The Canvio Flex shares the joint-highest average here at 4.6, from 242 ratings, and it is the only drive that names smartphones, tablets, Macs and Windows PCs in the same breath. In theory that makes it the most flexible 4TB portable hard drive in the round-up for mixed-device households.

It ships with USB-C and USB-A compatibility, a warm silver finish and a 5 Gbps transfer rate, and the storage capacity is listed as 4096 GB. The product description calls it a 2.5-inch mechanical hard disk.

Then the numbers fall apart. Read speed is listed as '445 Bytes Per Second' — bytes, not megabytes — on a drive whose transfer rate is 5 Gbps. Form factor appears as 3.5 Inches in one field and 2.5-inch in another, the enclosure material is given as Leather, and rotation speed is 7200 RPM. Anyone who needs a documented read speed should not buy this one.

ModusTech Vault 4TB Desktop External Hard Drive, USB-C

ModusTech Vault 4TB desktop external hard drive with USB-C cable
£89.91 4.0 311 reviews

The cheapest drive here at £89.91 — and the one whose 625 MB/s read claim matches its own 5 Gbps bus ceiling rather than a measured disk speed.

Pros

  • £89.91, more than £48 below any other drive here
  • USB-C with a 5 Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface
  • Power adapter and 2-in-1 USB-C/USB-A cable in the box
  • Two-year ModusTech warranty
  • Listed as working with Windows, macOS, PS4, PS5, Xbox and smart TVs

Cons

  • Bullets say 7200 RPM, the spec table says 5400 RPM
  • 625 MB/s read speed is the exact ceiling of its own 5 Gbps USB interface
  • Data transfer rate field says 10 Gigabits Per Second, double the 5 Gbps quoted elsewhere

£89.91 is the lowest price here and £48.08 below the next cheapest drive. It is also the only desktop model in the group: mains-powered, with a power adapter and a 2-in-1 USB-C/USB-A cable in the box.

The interface is USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 at 5 Gbps, backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, pre-formatted, and listed as working with Windows, macOS, PS4, PS5, Xbox and smart TVs. For pure cost per terabyte, nothing else here comes close.

Crucially, the performance numbers do not survive a second read. The bullets describe a 7200 RPM mechanism while the spec table says 5400 RPM. Read speed is quoted as 625 MB/s — exactly the theoretical ceiling of the 5 Gbps interface quoted in the same bullets, a bus figure rather than a measured disk speed. As a result, the data transfer rate field says 10 Gigabits Per Second, double the 5 Gbps stated elsewhere. The 4.0 average is the lowest of the nine, with 17 one-star entries in the histogram. If you want the best 4TB external hard drive on price alone, this is it; if you want believable figures, it is not.

Final Verdict

For most homes, the £143.16 Seagate Portable is the soundest pick: 265,604 ratings at 4.5, a 120 MB/s read speed quoted, and a 260 g body — even so, its own listing calls the form factor 18 inches. If you need the best 4TB external hard drive for a console, the £140.99 WD_BLACK P10 quotes 130 MB/s and carries a three-year warranty, though it has just 41 ratings behind it. If price decides it, the £89.91 ModusTech is the cheapest 4TB backup drive here by £48, but it is a desktop unit that needs mains power, and its 625 MB/s figure matches the ceiling of its own 5 Gbps interface rather than any measured disk speed. Either way, the best 4TB external hard drive for you is the one whose ports, price and warranty match how you actually use it.

Best DAB Radios 2026: 9 Ranked, and the 30W Claim That Doesn't Add Up

A radio that claims 30 W of output and a battery that lasts over 10 hours is claiming something the arithmetic will not support. The AZATOM Spitalfields 2 lists 30 W maximum speaker output; the same listing says its 2,000 mAh battery runs for over 10 hours. A 2,000 mAh cell at the 3.7 V that appears in these spec sheets holds about 7.4 Wh, so ten hours averages 0.74 W. At a genuine 30 W, that pack would be empty in about 15 minutes. That is the problem with shopping for the best DAB radios on wattage alone: the Mycket, at £29.99, declares 5 W against a 2,200 mAh battery and 12 hours — around 0.68 W average, the same order of magnitude as the AZATOM. The '30 W' and the '5 W' are not the same measurement, which is why a £29.99 radio looks six times more powerful than a £44.95 one. We ranked nine of the best DAB radios on Amazon on preset count, power source, battery type, display and how well each listing's own numbers agree with each other. Every one of the dab radios reviewed here was checked against its spec table, not against its marketing headline. Price runs from £21.59 to £99.00, and the most expensive model is not the one with the biggest wattage claim.

Best CPU Air Cooler 2026: 10 Ranked, One Sold Twice at Two Prices

The same cooler appears twice in this best cpu air cooler shortlist, at two different prices. The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE is listed at £29.99 with 3,133 ratings and again at £35.90 with 307 ratings — £5.91 more for a name that is identical. The two listings cannot both be right about the hardware: one records 12 Volts and 265 watts, the other 5 Volts and 3 watts. Those watts are not power draw. The cooler's own fan is a 4-pin, 12-volt part moving 66.17 CFM, and the 265 W sitting in the Wattage field is the thermal capacity quoted in the bullet text, not the current the product consumes. The pattern repeats. be quiet! sells two Pure Rock Pro 3 coolers at the same £41.98, yet one lists 3.6 watts and the other 250 watts. Cooler Master's MasterLiquid describes a 394 mm radiator in its copy while its own dimensions field says 15.7 cm long. We ranked ten of the best cpu air cooler options on Amazon on three criteria: the published price and rating counts, the socket support each listing actually states, and whether a product's own specifications agree with each other.

Best Case Fans 2026: 9 Ranked by What a Fan Actually Costs

Almost nothing in this list of the best case fans is sold as a single fan, so the price on the page is not the price of a fan. The £21.49 ARCTIC five-pack works out at £4.30 a fan. The £18.66 ARCTIC pack works out at £3.73. Meanwhile the £18.99 be quiet! Light Wings buys you one fan. The same be quiet! Light Wings 120mm PWM high-speed fan is listed twice — £18.99 on its own and £44.99 as a three-pack with an ARGB hub. That is £15.00 a fan, and £11.98 less than three singles. The noise numbers cannot be lined up either: ARCTIC quotes 0.3 sones on both its five-packs, Noctua quotes 25.1 dB(A), be quiet! 31 dB and Corsair 36 dB. As a result the spec tables are not all in the same unit, and Noctua is the only brand here quoting airflow in cubic metres rather than CFM. We ranked nine of the best case fans on Amazon on three measures a buyer can check: the price divided by the number of fans in the box, the specification each manufacturer actually publishes, and the review count behind the star rating. There is no test bench here. Where a listing contradicts itself — and several do — we say so, with both numbers.
